Chapter 47 - The Fall of the Architect

The electromagnetic shockwave tore through the chamber with the force of an artillery strike.
The magnetic clamps pinning Rachel’s limbs blew apart in a shower of sparks, releasing her instantly. Across the room, the glowing forcefields shielding Lily-Prime vanished, and the massive bank of overhead surgical monitors went pitch black as emergency lithium batteries kicked in with a dull amber glow.
Rachel did not hesitate. She did not stop to weep over Arthur’s motionless body. She moved with pure, lethal instinct.
Vaulting over the smoking deck plates, she snatched a fallen combat shotgun, racked the slide, and charged the central gantry.
Lily-Prime spun around, her violet eyes wide with the first genuine expression of shock her synthetic face had ever registered. "System anomaly—local power failure—"
Rachel cleared the twenty-foot gap in three massive strides, tackled the older clone to the iron grating, and drove the heavy steel stock of the shotgun directly across Lily-Prime’s jaw. The synthetic skin split open, exposing gold wiring and shattered ceramic bone.
"You talked about my sister's pain like it was code," Rachel snarled, pinning the clone down with a knee against her throat. She jammed the barrel of the shotgun directly into the gold neural port at the base of the girl's neck. "Let's see how much data you can process at point-blank range."
"You cannot stop the consensus..." Lily-Prime sputtered, blue spark discharges jumping between her teeth. "The Chairman is already conscious—"
*BOOM.*
Rachel pulled the trigger. The blast obliterated the neural port, sending fragments of circuitry and coolant spraying across the bridge. The clone's body seized violently, her violet eyes dimming forever into lifeless gray.
Rachel sprinted to the central dais, ripping the restraint cables away from Lily’s tiny arms and lifting the crying child into her arms.
"I've got you, baby," Rachel choked out, holding the girl so tight she could feel the frantic beating of Lily’s heart against her ribs. "I've got you. It's over."
"Mommy..." Lily pointed with a trembling finger toward the massive biological sphere hanging in the center of the abyss.
The glass tanks containing the preserved bodies of Alexander Sterling and the ruling council were not shutting down. Deprived of the central regulatory grid by the EMP, the system had gone into hyper-drive. The amniotic fluids inside the cylinders were boiling.
From the central sphere, an immense, distorted voice boomed—not from a speaker, but shaking the very structural foundations of the trench itself.
