Chapter 34 - The Bloodline Encryption

The silence in the underground bunker was deafening, broken only by the steady drip of condensation from the rusted ceiling pipes and the agonizingly heavy wheezing of the old man.
Arthur Vance stood pinned in the beam of Rachel’s light, his gray hair plastered to his forehead with sweat and blood. His eyes, usually filled with the unflinching authority of a corporate titan, were hollowed out by an unbearable, decades-old shame.
"Is it true, Arthur?" Rachel whispered. Her right hand hovered two inches above the grip of her holstered sidearm. Her voice was terrifyingly calm—the quiet before a hurricane destroys an entire coast. "Is Daniel your blood?"
"Rachel, please..." Arthur croaked, raising his trembling, liver-spotted hands. "Thirty years ago... long before you ever met my legitimate son, David... I was a reckless, arrogant monster. I had an affair with Montgomery’s mother. I didn't know she was pregnant until Daniel was already an adult, already twisted, already recruited by the Covenant."
"And Lily?" Rachel’s voice cracked, a mother’s deepest nightmare unraveling before her. "You let him take Lily? You watched that monster chain my daughter to a radiator like an animal, and you kept silent to protect the Vance stock price?!"
"NO!" Arthur roared, tears streaming freely down his wrinkled cheeks. "I didn't know! I swear on David’s grave, I didn't know Daniel had taken her until the night Daniel called me with that sickening video! Daniel hated me. He wanted to destroy everything David built. He made Lily suffer because he knew she was the light of my life! He knew that seeing my granddaughter treated like a stray dog would kill me slowly, piece by piece!"
"Grandpa didn't hurt me, Mommy," Lily’s small voice pierced the darkness.
Lily stepped between Rachel’s gun and Arthur’s chest. The seven-year-old girl, filthy, bruised, her clothes hanging in tatters, took Arthur’s giant, trembling hand into her own tiny fingers.
"When Daniel turned off the lights," Lily said, her voice steadying with an unnatural, heartbreaking maturity, "he always told me that Grandpa didn't want me. He said Grandpa paid him ten dollars every time I cried. But then... the night Grandpa broke the door down... Grandpa took the chain off my neck and threw it at Daniel’s face. Grandpa’s hands were shaking just like they are right now."
Arthur dropped to his knees on the cold concrete, burying his face in Lily’s small shoulder, his massive frame shaking with uncontrollable sobs. "Forgive me, Lily. I should have burned the world down the day you were born. I should have slaughtered them all."
"Heartwarming," a dry, aristocratic voice echoed from the shadows behind them.
Rachel whipped around, bringing her sidearm up instantly.
Standing thirty feet away at the intersection of the blast tunnel was the Architect. His pristine white coat was now stained with his own crimson blood from the shoulder wound Rachel had inflicted, but he held a heavy, customized submachine gun leveled effortlessly at Arthur's head. Flanking him were four surviving mechanized operatives, their armor scorched but functional, their weapons humming with lethal charge.
"Family reunions in fallout shelters are always so melodramatic," the Architect sneered, wiping a drop of sweat from his forehead. "Daniel’s petty sadism was crude, I admit. Forcing a child to eat from a bowl on the floor while filming it for blackmail? Repulsive. Inefficient. But it served its purpose. It broke the girl’s spirit just enough so that when we initiated the Genesis Protocol, she wouldn't resist the neural uplink."
"You touched my daughter's mind," Rachel hissed, stepping in front of Lily and Arthur, her eyes burning like twin suns of vengeance. "I am going to take your heart out with my bare hands."
"You won't have the chance, Director Vance," the Architect replied calmly. He tapped a digital datapad on his wrist. "The orbital network is fully primed. The automated silo doors in North Dakota, Siberia, and the South China Sea have begun their hydraulic cycles. Within ten minutes, Lily’s biometric signal will authorize the launch of forty-eight hypersonic nuclear warheads."

He extended his gloved hand toward Lily.
"Hand the child to me. Or watch the world burn in the fire her heartbeat ignited."
