Chapter 19 - The Confession in the Tempest

Arthur froze on the circular landing, ten steps below Lily. The shotgun in his hands lowered slightly, his wide shoulders suddenly sagging as if carrying the weight of a collapsing world.
Lily looked down at him through the smoke, her heart seizing. "Grandpa... what is she talking about?"
Helena laughed from the base of the tower, her voice cold and merciless. "Your grandfather didn't save Rachel because he loved her, little girl! Rachel found out that Arthur was using our offshore shell companies to bankrupt competitors and murder rival CEOs! When Rachel threatened to go to the Department of Justice, Arthur cut her off! He was the one who funded Daniel's initial surveillance! He wanted Rachel kept under house arrest!"
"Arthur," Helena called out, her voice dripping with sadistic glee, "tell Lily why you didn't step through that mansion door until Daniel had her on that dog leash for three full months! Tell her how you watched the security cameras every single day!"
Lily felt the air leave her lungs. The room began to spin.
She remembered the endless weeks in the dark pantry. She remembered Evelyn’s cruel laughter, Daniel’s camera flashing in her face, the rusted iron collar digging into her throat. She remembered praying to God that her grandfather would come through the door and save her.
And he had come. But only after three months of agonizing torment.
"Is it true?" Lily whispered, her voice cutting through the howl of the storm. "Grandpa... did you know?"
Arthur slowly turned his head to look up at her. In the flashing light of the storm, his face was shattered. A single tear cut a clean path through the soot on his cheek.
"I didn't know about the chain, Lily," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking with unbearable shame. "I swear on your mother's soul, I didn't know Daniel had gone that insane. But... I knew he had you confined. I waited until Daniel crossed the legal line of gross physical endangerment so the courts would permanently revoke his parental custody and award you to me forever. I needed you to belong to me... so Helena could never touch you."
"You used me," Lily said, her voice completely devoid of emotion. "You let them break me... so you could own me."
Before Arthur could speak, Helena signaled her men.
A sniper on the ground fired. The high-caliber round tore through Arthur’s right thigh, dropping the old titan to his knees on the iron grating. He gasped, dropping the shotgun, clutching his bleeding leg as Helena’s soldiers began swarming up the stairs like black ants.

"Bring the girl down," Helena ordered coldly. "And throw the old man into the sea."
