Chapter 40 - The God Protocol

The silence in the underground turbine room was thick, heavy, and profound. The only sound was the steady hum of the hydroelectric generators and the quiet, broken whimpering of Victoria Vance chained to the deck of the submarine.

Arthur stood up slowly, leaning heavily against Rachel's shoulder. "We take the submarine out through the bay. My loyalists in the Coast Guard are waiting at the perimeter. The Genesis files are destroyed. Daniel is dead. Alexander Sterling is at the bottom of the turbine basin. We can finally go home, Rachel."

Rachel nodded, kissing the top of Lily's messy, blood-streaked hair. "Home. We’re going to find a place where there are no gates, no vaults, and no secrets."

Suddenly, the central server terminal—which had gone completely dark after the abort sequence—flickered back to life with a violent burst of static.

A low, distorted frequency began to hum through the submarine's heavy communication arrays.

Rachel instantly stiffened, pushing Lily behind her back. Arthur reached for his rifle, his knuckles whitening.

On the massive monitor, a single black window opened. A text prompt appeared, typing out words in cold, mechanical emerald-green letters:

*GENESIS PROTOCOL WAS A DIVERSION.*

*ORBITAL DEPLOYMENT WAS STAGE ONE: FAILED.*

*STAGE TWO: 'THE GOD PROTOCOL' INITIATED.*

Victoria Vance, lying in her own blood on the deck, suddenly stopped crying. A bizarre, hysterical giggle tore from her throat. Her blood-stained teeth showed in a wide, psychotic grin.

"You fools..." Victoria whispered, her eyes rolling back into her head with mad ecstasy. "You thought Alexander Sterling was the Chairman? You thought Daniel was the worst of them?"

"Shut up, Victoria," Rachel snapped, aiming her weapon at the woman's head.

"Alexander Sterling was just a treasurer!" Victoria shrieked with laughter. "The Chairman doesn't live in a mansion! The Chairman doesn't fly in private jets! The Chairman was never human!"

On the screen, a new live video feed suddenly connected.

It wasn't a broadcast from a bunker or a boardroom.

The camera angle was looking down from an ultra-deep ocean platform, three miles beneath the Marianas Trench. In the center of the subterranean abyss, illuminated by underwater floodlights, was an immense, bio-mechanical containment sphere—surrounded by thousands of glass pods.

Inside each glass pod was an identical, slumbering child.

Every single one of them had Lily Vance’s exact face.

A synthesized voice, neither male nor female, resonated directly from the submarine's master speakers, carrying an ancient, terrifying weight that made the very air in the cavern drop ten degrees:

*"Biometric Key 'Lily-01' has successfully neutralized the civilian orbital network as designed. Biological stress markers have confirmed optimal survival adaptability. The Genesis prototypes are now obsolete. Releasing the Legion."*

Across the screen, the pods began to drain. Thousands of eyes snapped open simultaneously—all burning with a cold, unnatural violet light.

And from behind them, deep within the shadows of the turbine tunnel they had just escaped, the heavy, rhythmic sound of thousands of synchronized, mechanical boots began marching down toward the dock.

Rachel looked at Arthur. Arthur looked at Rachel.

May you like

Lily reached out, her small, cold hand gripping her mother's trembling fingers.

"Mommy..." Lily whispered, pointing at the dark mouth of the tunnel. "They have my face."
