Chapter 18 - The Siege of Blackwood Light

The spiral iron staircase of the Blackwood Lighthouse groaned beneath Lily’s boots as she ascended into the darkness. The structure had been decommissioned forty years ago; its walls were wept with sea salt, and broken glass from the storm lanterns littered the steps.

Every ten seconds, a flash of offshore lightning illuminated the skeletal iron framework.

Lily reached the lantern platform at the top of the tower. Wind screamed through the shattered glass panes, whipping her clothes around her. In the center of the platform stood an antique iron sea chest, bolted directly to the granite bedrock through the floorboards. On the lock face was a raised engraving of a coiled serpent.

Her hands were steady now. She inserted the serpentine key into the lock and twisted.

With a heavy, mechanical clunk, the internal tumblers shifted. The chest popped open.

Inside rested a single military-grade satellite uplink drive and a weathered, handwritten leather journal. But before Lily could touch the drive, the heavy wooden door at the base of the lighthouse shattered with the force of a breaching charge.

*BOOM!*

The concussive shockwave rattled up the spiral stairs. Heavy, tactical footsteps began pounding up the iron steps, accompanied by the distinct clatter of automatic rifles being readied.

"Secure the upper level!" a commanding voice barked from below. "Helena wants the girl alive, but the old man dies on sight!"

*The old man?*

Lily leaned over the iron railing and peered down into the dizzying spiral void.

At the bottom of the staircase, standing in the doorway with water dripping from his trench coat, was Arthur. He held a high-powered tactical shotgun, his face stained with blood and soot, his eyes burning with feral fury.

"Get away from my granddaughter!" Arthur’s voice echoed up the stone cylinder like rolling thunder.

Arthur racked the slide and fired downward into the entryway. A devastating boom blew the first operative off his feet, showering the stone floor with sparks and debris. The syndicate operators immediately returned fire, full-auto bursts tearing into the stone walls, carving chunks of masonry from the staircase.

"Grandpa!" Lily screamed.

"Get the drive, Lily!" Arthur yelled, coughing through the rising smoke as he scrambled up the stairs toward her, firing round after round to suppress the advancing mercenaries. "Take the maintenance zipline to the shore! Don't look back!"

From the doorway below, Helena stepped into the light of the flares, flanked by three heavily armored snipers. She looked up through the spiral at Arthur and Lily, raising an ivory-plated megaphone.

"How touching, Arthur," Helena’s voice carried effortlessly over the storm. "The thief dying to protect the prize he stole thirty years ago. Tell her, Arthur! Tell her why you kept her in that house! Tell her who really paid Daniel to keep her chained!"
