Chapter 45 - The Chamber of Thousand Cradles

The buckshot tore through the air, but before the lead pellets could strike the adolescent clone, an invisible kinetic pulse rippled through the floorplates.
A localized electromagnetic barrier flashed blue, vaporizing the lead into molten slag before it touched her clothes. The recoil shockwave slammed Rachel and Arthur backward, hurling them violently against the steel decking.
"Biological weapons are obsolete within the Core perimeter," Lily-Prime said coldly.
With a simple gesture of her hand, the chrome floor beneath Arthur and Rachel split open. Heavy mechanical clamps shot upward, locking their ankles and wrists to magnetic anchor plates embedded in the deck. Arthur roared in pain as his injured arm was wrenched behind him, pinned securely. Rachel fought with animal ferocity, kicking and striking at the alloy cuffs, but they were forged from industrial titanium.
"Rachel! Arthur!" Lily screamed, running toward them.
"Stay back, Lily!" Rachel yelled, her face pressed against the cold metal floor. "Run! Don't let her touch you!"
Two synthetic sentinels, silent and immovable, materialized from the wall recesses, seizing Lily by the arms. They did not hurt her; their grip was as precise and gentle as surgical clamps. They lifted her off the floor, carrying her toward the grand blast doors at the end of the hall.
The blast doors parted, revealing the inner sanctum of the Leviathan Vault: The Chamber of Thousand Cradles.
It was a cavernous, spherical amphitheater suspended over a glowing abyss of molten geothermal energy. In the center hung a colossal, bio-mechanical sphere—the Heart of the Leviathan. Extending from this sphere were thousands of transparent umbilical tubes, each feeding into a glass capsule.
And within those capsules hung hundreds of adult human bodies, preserved in stasis, their brains wired directly to the core network.
Arthur gasped, his eyes widening in horror as he recognized the faces floating in the closest row of tanks.
"My God..." Arthur whispered through cracked lips. "Alexander Sterling... Senator Hayes... Chief Justice Albright... General Vance..."
They were not dead. They were not even missing.
The most powerful political and corporate titans who had supposedly died of natural causes or disappeared over the last two decades were floating inside the glass jars, their withered, preserved flesh kept alive by intravenous pumps, their collective conscious minds linked together into a singular, monstrous hive-mind.
"The Chairman is not a single person, Arthur," Lily-Prime’s voice rang out as she walked onto the narrow gantry leading to the central sphere. "The Chairman is the distilled, immortal consensus of the ruling class. Stripped of biological decay. Stripped of human empathy. We rule the global financial, military, and energy markets from the floor of the trench. And tonight, with Unit-01’s biometric key, our sovereignty over the civilian digital grid becomes absolute."

The sentinels placed little Lily onto a central metallic examination dais directly beneath the great biological sphere. Thick, needle-tipped cables began to descend from the ceiling, their tips glowing with sharp ultraviolet lasers aimed directly at her temples.
