Chapter 35 - The Architect's Ultimatum

"You're bluffing," Rachel said, though every tactical instinct in her gut told her the madman was telling the terrifying truth. "The United States Strategic Command would never allow an automated biometric override on the nuclear triad. The fail-safes require dual-key presidential verification."

The Architect chuckled, a dry, rattling sound that bounced off the steel walls. "Presidential verification? Director Vance, who do you think funds the campaigns of those presidents? Who do you think wrote the software architecture for the Pentagon's 'Project Aegis' thirty years ago? Arthur Vance’s firm did. And Arthur's chief software architect was none other than myself."

Arthur lifted his head from Lily’s shoulder, his pale face suddenly draining of what little color remained. "Sterling... Alexander Sterling. You were supposed to have died in the 2018 crash over the Baltic."

"Death is merely an accounting maneuver for the truly wealthy, Arthur," Alexander Sterling said with a venomous grin. "While you were playing the benevolent patriarch, donating billions to orphanages and cancer wards to cleanse your dirty conscience, I built the Covenant into a shadow state. We own the communication satellites. We own the financial clearinghouses. And today, we take the ultimate monopoly: the power of life and death over every living soul on this miserable rock."

Sterling raised his datapad, angling the high-resolution holographic projection toward them.

The screen flickered to life. Across the world, television networks, internet streams, Times Square billboards, and Shibuya crosswalk screens were suddenly cutting to the same horrifying broadcast.

It was Daniel Montgomery’s video.

Millions of people across the globe were watching Lily Vance on the cold tile floor of the Montgomery estate, a heavy iron chain pulled taut around her tiny bruised neck, Daniel’s mocking laugh echoing through the speakers: *'Bark like a dog—then I’ll let you eat!'*

Underneath the footage, a bright red countdown timer ticked backward: **08:42... 08:41... 08:40...**

Above the timer ran a crawling headline in twelve languages:

*THE GENESIS PROTOCOL HAS INITIATED. GLOBAL RETALIATION IMMINENT. BIOMETRIC KEY DETECTED: LILY VANCE. THE WEAK SHALL INHERIT THE ASHES.*

"You're broadcasting her humiliation to the entire planet?" Rachel’s voice shook with an uncontrollable, terrifying fury. The veins in her neck bulged, her knuckles turning bone-white against the grip of her weapon.

"Psychological warfare, Director," Sterling said smoothly. "By exposing her face and her identity to every panic-stricken citizen on Earth, I have ensured that even if you somehow manage to slip past me today, there is nowhere you can hide. Every government, every intelligence agency, every terrified mob with a rifle will hunt Lily Vance down like a rabid animal to slit her throat and stop the clock."

Sterling took one slow step forward, leveling his weapon directly between Lily's eyes.

"Give her to me, Rachel. I need her retinal pattern to complete the targeting sequence. Hand her over, and I will allow you and Arthur to die quickly. Refuse, and I will shoot off your limbs one by one, force you to watch me calibrate the terminal using your daughter’s severed eyes, and then leave you in this bunker to starve in the dark."

Lily did not cry.

Slowly, the little girl stepped out from behind her mother’s back. The flickering red emergency light cast long, demonic shadows across her small, bruised face. Her eyes were wide, but they were no longer filled with the blind terror of the child who had been starved in a closet.

"Mommy," Lily said quietly.

"Lily, get back behind me," Rachel commanded without looking away from Sterling.

"Mommy," Lily repeated, her voice eerily clear. "The chain isn't on my neck anymore."

Lily reached down, picked up a discarded, rusted nine-millimeter casing from the floor, and squeezed it tightly in her small palm until her knuckles whitened.

"Grandpa took it off," Lily whispered, staring directly into Alexander Sterling's cold eyes. "And you talk too much."
