Chapter 50 - The Eternal Watch

The party wound down as the golden afternoon gave way to the soft, purple majesty of a mountain twilight. One by one, our guests departed down the smooth granite driveway, their headlights disappearing through the tall timber gates, until the house settled back into its profound, sacred stillness.

At midnight, I walked out onto the cedar back deck alone, carrying a single cup of herbal tea. The summer night was cool, scented with lake water, damp earth, and the ancient resin of the pines. I took a deep, steady breath of the cool mountain air, feeling an immense, immovable peace settle deep into the marrow of my bones.
