Chapter 10 - Back to the Front, Home in My Heart

Tuesday morning arrived before the sun had even fully breached the horizon. At 0445 hours, I stood on the front porch of 44 Pine Crest Lane, dressed in my crisp civilian travel gear, my heavy-duty duffel bag slung securely over my shoulder.

The air was crisp, biting with the crisp promise of autumn, carrying the familiar, comforting scent of pine needles and damp earth. I walked slowly around the perimeter of the house, checking every window latch, confirming the smart locks were fully armed, and taking one final, lingering look at the custom stonework I had saved every deployment bonus to build.

This house wasn't just a building; it was a fortress of my own making. It was proof that I could build something beautiful, protect it with absolute authority, and defend it against anyone foolish enough to underestimate the quiet woman behind the desk.

A sleek black military transport vehicle rolled quietly down the gravel driveway, its headlights cutting twin beams through the morning fog. The driver’s side door opened, and a young sergeant stepped out, snapping a crisp, immaculate salute as he spotted me.

"Good morning, Colonel Carter! Transport ready for transit to regional headquarters!"

I returned the salute sharply, my hand slicing through the air with practiced, flawless precision. "Good morning, Sergeant. Let’s move out."

I tossed my duffel bag into the back of the vehicle, took one last look at the lake house as the first rays of golden sunlight crested the roofline, and slid into the passenger seat. As the vehicle accelerated down the winding road, leaving the peaceful shores behind me, I felt a deep, unshakable warmth settle in my chest.

Let the world think whatever they wanted about my boring government job. Let arrogant brothers-in-law learn the hard way what happens when they mistake quiet grace for weakness. I was Emily Carter—Colonel in the United States Army, protector of borders both foreign and domestic, and absolute queen of my own domain. And when my next deployment was over, I knew exactly where I would return: right back to my sanctuary, standing tall, unbreakable, and entirely unbothered.
