Chapter 13 - The Hammer of Military Justice

By Thursday morning, the consequences of Ryan’s arrogance accelerated with the terrifying velocity of an avalanche.

Marcus Vance lived up to his predatory legal reputation. Instead of merely issuing a polite warning letter, Marcus coordinated directly with the county prosecutor and the base civilian affairs desk to draft a comprehensive civil countersuit. The filing was sixty pages of unassailable documentation: high-resolution timestamped frame captures from my kitchen camera showing Ryan forcing open the patio latch, audio recordings of him admitting he was going to take my boat without permission, and certified receipts of the two thousand dollars in property cleanup, broken heirloom ceramics, and emergency locksmith services.

Furthermore, Marcus attached a sworn deposition from Jessica detailing how Ryan had stolen the spare key from her purse, forged a handwritten permission note, and deceived his own elderly parents into believing he had secured an official vacation rental lease.

The blow landed right in the center of Ryan’s everyday life. Because Ryan had used his corporate company email account to send threatening messages to my legal team and local law enforcement, Marcus served the civil summons directly to his workplace—the regional commercial lending firm where Ryan worked as a junior account manager.

At 1400 hours, Marcus called me with an update while I was reviewing drone telemetry in the logistics office.

"Emily, you should have heard the squeal from his HR director," Marcus laughed, his voice crackling with professional satisfaction. "The firm’s compliance officer received a formal notice that one of their loan officers was using corporate infrastructure to harass a senior military officer and generate public liability. Ryan was called into the managing director's office at noon. By twelve-thirty, they had confiscated his company laptop, stripped him of his portfolio, and placed him on indefinite unpaid administrative suspension pending an internal conduct review."

"What about his public slander campaign?" I asked, keeping my eyes fixed on the logistics readout in front of me.

"Completely evaporated," Marcus replied. "The moment our cease-and-desist hit his inbox—promising a half-million-dollar defamation suit that would bankrupt his entire lineage—he scrubbed every single Facebook post, deleted his accounts, and tried calling Jessica forty times to beg for mercy. She didn't answer a single call."

I leaned back in my office chair, listening to the hum of the command center around me. "He’s backed into a corner, Marcus. A man whose ego is completely decoupled from his ability becomes dangerous when his delusions are shattered. Keep the remote surveillance on Pine Crest Lane at maximum sensitivity. He still thinks the world owes him a victory."

"Don't worry, Emily," Marcus said grimly. "Sheriff Henderson’s patrol cars are cruising Pine Crest Lane twice an hour. If Ryan Miller so much as slows down within half a mile of your lake house, he won't be going home in his truck."
