Chapter 12 - The Hollow Vendetta

By Wednesday afternoon, Ryan’s desperation had shifted from a localized tantrum into a fully weaponized campaign of public slander. Sitting in a quiet corner of the officers' mess hall sipping black coffee, I opened a link sent by my sister Jessica. Her accompanying text message read simply: He has completely lost his mind, Emily. Please be careful.

The link led to an obscure regional Facebook community forum titled Lake District Community Watch. There, posted under Ryan’s personal account with a dramatic picture of his towed RV, was a sprawling, incoherent diatribe. He painted himself as a devoted family man who had rented a lakeside getaway for a quiet gathering of children and grandparents, only to be ambushed by an "unhinged military officer abusing her rank, colluding with corrupt local police, and throwing infants into the cold night."

He had even tagged regional veteran organizations, local television consumer-advocacy reporters, and county government officials, demanding an investigation into "Colonel Emily Carter's corrupt abuse of power."

In the comments section, a handful of clueless internet bystanders had posted outraged emojis, while dozens of locals—who actually knew Sheriff Henderson’s impeccable reputation—began questioning Ryan’s story, asking why the sheriff had cited him for criminal trespass if he had actually rented the home.

I set my phone face-down on the laminate table. In warfare, when an enemy launches an uncoordinated, poorly planned frontal assault across open terrain without artillery support, you do not scramble your jets. You simply wait for them to enter the pre-registered kill zone of your automated defenses.

Ten minutes later, my desk phone buzzed. It was Lieutenant Colonel Hayes from the base Staff Judge Advocate office.

"Colonel Carter," Hayes said, his tone carrying the wry amusement of an experienced military attorney who had seen every civilian scam in the book. "I assume you’re aware of the civilian individual attempting to flood our civilian liaison portal with accusations of illegal eviction and military intimidation?"

"I am, Colonel Hayes," I replied smoothly. "My civilian attorney, Marcus Vance, should have already transferred the verified deed, the surveillance footage of forced entry, and Sheriff Henderson’s official arrest warnings to your office."

"He did, Emily. In fact, we reviewed the footage fifteen minutes ago," Hayes chuckled dryly. "Watching that civilian strut around your kitchen drinking your vintage beer while claiming you were a paper pusher was peak comedy. But on a serious note: he has crossed into federal territory. Filing false reports against an active-duty commanding officer and attempting to initiate public harassment against protected military personnel falls squarely under federal anti-doxxing and civil tort statutes. Do you want our office to issue a formal cease-and-desist with federal backing, or do you want Marcus to handle it in county court?"

"Let Marcus hit him with both barrels on the civil side first," I said evenly. "Save the federal hammer for when he tries to step over the line again. I want him to watch his life unravel one invoice at a time."
