Chapter 4 - The Tables Turn

The sudden silence in the living room was deafening. The only sound was the distant hum of the refrigerator and the heavy breathing of Ryan’s father, who was halfway out of my recliner with a bag of chips in his hand.

Ryan marched toward the door, pointing a trembling finger right in my face. "Are you out of your absolute mind, Emily? Calling the cops on your own family?! Get them out of here right now before I have you arrested for harassment!"

Sheriff Henderson stepped past me, his massive frame filling the doorway. He placed a heavy hand on his duty belt, his voice cutting through the room like a buzzsaw. "Step back, son. You’re currently committing criminal trespass on private property. Put your hands where I can see them and identify yourself."

Ryan blinked, momentarily stunned by the authority radiating from the sheriff. "I’m—I’m Ryan Miller! Jessica’s husband! This is a family gathering! She gave us permission!" He whirled around, looking desperately at my sister. "Jess, tell them! Tell them we’re allowed to be here!"

Jessica looked like she wanted to crawl under the floorboards. She shrank back against the kitchen island, her face pale. "I... I told her we needed a place for the weekend, Ryan... I didn't think she'd call the police..."

"You told her nothing of the sort, Mrs. Miller," Marcus chimed in smoothly, stepping into the entryway with his clipboard held up like a shield of absolute truth. He flashed the official county deed under Ryan’s nose. "Miss Emily Carter is the sole and exclusive owner of this property. There is no lease, no rental agreement, and no legal authorization for any of you to be within five hundred feet of this structure."

Ryan’s face contorted into an ugly snarl. "She’s lying! She’s just some low-level government paper pusher! She doesn't have the authority to kick twenty people out on a holiday weekend! You’re just a bunch of corrupt cops taking bribes!"

"Watch your mouth, civilian," Sheriff Henderson warned, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "You are addressing a commissioned officer of the United States armed forces, and you are currently trespassing on federal-level protected private property. One more word out of line and you’ll be spending the night in a county jail cell wearing handcuffs."

The room erupted into murmurs of panic. Ryan’s mother dropped her teacup, shattering porcelain across my hardwood floor. "My goodness! Ryan, what is going on?! Who is this woman?!"

I walked slowly past Ryan, my boots clicking rhythmically against the floorboards. I didn't look at him. I walked straight to the kitchen island, picked up my vintage IPA that he had left half-empty, and poured it down the sink. Then I turned around, leaned against the counter, and crossed my arms.

"You wanted to know what I do for a living, Ryan?" I asked, my voice carrying a quiet, lethal calm that made the hairs on the back of everyone's arms stand up. "You thought I sat in a boring office pushing papers? Let me enlighten you. I command battalions. I manage logistics for combat zones. And right now? I am exercising my absolute legal right to clear vermin out of my house."
