Chapter 17 - Red-Handed Reckoning

Ryan reached the edge of the cedar deck, pausing for a moment to catch his breath. The night air was freezing, and his breath puffed out in heavy white clouds. He looked up at the darkened glass of the lake house, an arrogant, malicious grin spreading across his face. He lifted the crowbar, wedging the angled steel claw beneath the reinforced frame of my sliding door, preparing to put his entire body weight behind the pry.

Crack.

Before the glass could even shudder, two things happened simultaneously with deafening precision.

First, the exterior of the house transformed from pitch black into midday brilliance. Six twelve-thousand-lumen stadium floodlights—installed along the eaves for emergency perimeter illumination—snapped on all at once, blinding Ryan instantly. He let out a strangled shriek, dropping his crowbar onto the deck boards as his hands flew up to protect his dilated eyes.

Second, the pine trees surrounding the driveway exploded into flashing strobes of blue and red. Two county cruiser vehicles surged over the crest of the gravel drive, their heavy tires throwing rocks as they cut off every possible avenue of retreat.

"County Sheriff! On the ground! Drop the weapon and get on your stomach right now!"

The voice boomed through a vehicle loudspeaker, rattling the windowpanes. Sheriff Henderson’s squad car slid to a halt right behind them, its spotlight pinning Ryan against the sliding glass door like a trapped animal in headlights.

Ryan panicked. Blinded, disoriented, and fueled by drunken adrenaline, he didn't surrender. Instead, he made the catastrophic mistake of scooping the iron crowbar back off the wood and swinging it wildly into the air as three deputies charged up the deck stairs with tasers and sidearms drawn.

"Stay back! It’s my house! She stole everything from me!" Ryan screamed, his voice breaking into hysterical, terrified sobs.

"Taser! Taser! Taser!" Deputy Miller shouted.

The sharp pop of the compressed nitrogen cartridge echoed across the lake. The twin barbed prongs struck Ryan squarely in the center of his chest. Five seconds of neuromuscular incapacitation locked every muscle in his body instantly. His legs gave out beneath him, and he collapsed heavily onto the cedar planks with a dull, concussive thud, the crowbar clattering harmlessly off the side into the bushes.

Within ten seconds, Sheriff Henderson had his heavy knee planted firmly between Ryan’s shoulder blades, ratcheting cold steel handcuffs around his wrists until the metal clicked tight against the bone.

"Ryan Miller," Henderson barked into the dirt beneath Ryan’s bleeding cheek. "You are under arrest for felony armed burglary, violating a formal protection order, resisting arrest with a deadly weapon, and criminal trespass. You’re done, son. You’re finally done."
