Chapter 61 - The Black Sky Extraction

The freezing mountain gale hit my face like shattered glass the moment our winch dragged us clear of the Cairncastle elevator shaft.

Sirens wailed across the Highland ridge, their crimson strobes slashing through the driving whiteout of the midnight blizzard.

Behind us, hundreds of feet below the permafrost, Madeline’s voice still rattled in my bones like a poisoned curse.

She had promised me a war with every sovereign dynasty on Earth, and she was not a woman who made empty threats.

"Hold on to me, Claire!" Marcus shouted above the howling squall, his tactical boots slamming hard into the concrete lip of the roof silo.

He hauled me over the reinforced perimeter parapet just as automated lockdown doors slammed shut beneath our feet with the force of falling guillotines.

I clutched the cold titanium briefcase against my ribs, feeling the faint, high-frequency hum of its encrypted biometric locks against my skin.

Inside that box lay the deep clearing codes, the London vault transfers, and the evidence capable of dismantling the global syndicate my mother had built out of silence and spilled blood.

"Thermal signatures approaching from the south quadrant!" Marcus warned, dropping to one knee and sweeping his rifle across the frozen apron of the helipad.

Out of the dense curtain of snow, two unmarked black compound gunships emerged like predatory shadows, their twin rotors churning the freezing air into a blinding vortex.

They carried no military insignia, no tail numbers, and no national markings.

These were the clean-up squads of the Continental Sovereign Court, dispatched the second Cairncastle's distress beacon pulsed into the dark net.

Searchlights split the blizzard, blinding in their intensity, locking squarely onto the two of us standing exposed on the barren concrete.

"Drop the sovereign briefcase and step away from the edge!" a voice boomed from the lead gunship’s external loudspeakers, distorted and metallic.

"You are in possession of sovereign property; compliance guarantees extraction, resistance authorizes immediate lethal sanction!"

Marcus didn't hesitate; he thrust me behind the angled steel of an industrial HVAC exhaust vent as high-caliber rounds tore across the concrete where we had stood seconds earlier.

Sparks and pulverized stone showered over my coat as the deafening percussion of suppressed gunfire echoed across the crags.

"They aren't here to negotiate, Claire!" Marcus hissed, swapping out his magazine with practiced, mechanical efficiency. "Madeline flagged that case with an omega-level kill-on-sight order!"

"She knew we would take the roof," I breathed, my fingers digging into the briefcase's tactical handle. "She wants us erased before we can reach international airspace."

"Our extraction bird isn't coming—they've jammed every encrypted frequency from here to the North Sea," Marcus said, his jaw tightening as he peered around the steel flank.

I looked down at the briefcase; a digital OLED strip on its side pulsed red, displaying a countdown: *00:14:59 UNTIL CELLULAR PURGE*.

Madeline hadn't just armed the defenses; she had initiated a remote wipe sequence that would incinerate the flash memory inside the box within fifteen minutes if it wasn't docked to a secure terminal.

"Marcus, the funicular maintenance chute on the eastern ridge," I said, pointing toward the sheer drop over the cliffside where an old mining cableway descended into the valley.

"That cable has been out of service for twenty years," Marcus shouted, returning three controlled shots that shattered the cockpit glass of the second gunship. "The drop is eight hundred meters into a glacial gorge!"

"Then we jump, or we die under sovereign crossfire right here!" I yelled back.

He looked at me through the swirling snow, saw the absolute resolve burning in my eyes, and nodded once.

"Hook your carabiner to my harness—and whatever you do, do not drop that case!"

We broke into a sprint across the fire-swept roof just as a rocket pod flared beneath the lead helicopter's wing.

The blast detonated behind us, throwing us airborne over the icy railing into the screaming void of the Scottish night.
