Chapter 44 - The Puppeteer in Ermine Robes

I pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of the Chief Justice’s private chambers without knocking.

The brass hinges moved in total silence, revealing a palatial corner office lined with floor-to-ceiling leather-bound law volumes.

Chief Justice Victoria Sterling sat behind a massive antique desk, sipping amber Scotch from a crystal tumbler while reviewing transfer deeds.

Her silver hair was pulled back in an immaculate bun, her tailored designer suit exuding the effortless power of generational corruption.

On the desk in front of her rested a secure military tablet displaying the red digital timer linked to Marcus's phone: fourteen minutes left.

She did not jump or flinch when I entered; she merely took another slow sip of her Scotch and set the glass down with a soft click.

"You always did have your mother’s annoying habit of walking through walls, Claire," Victoria said, her voice smooth and devoid of shock.

"I assume Marcus’s body is rotting nicely inside Arthur’s vault?"

Marcus stepped out of the shadows behind me, his clothes torn, his face smeared with grease, and his eyes blazing with fury.

Victoria’s hand paused over her crystal glass for a fraction of a second, the very first crack in her aristocratic facade.

"Arthur was an incompetent megalomaniac," Victoria murmured, leaning back in her leather chair with a cold, dismissing sigh.

"He promised me twenty-five years ago that he would raise a creature incapable of mercy, remorse, or failure."

"He swore that by the time you turned twenty-five, the trauma he inflicted on you would turn you into our ultimate corporate weapon."

"He failed," I said, walking slowly toward her desk until my hands rested flat against the polished mahogany wood.

"Arthur thought he was breaking me every time he chose Eleanor, every time he ignored my triumphs, every time he let them starve my soul."

"He didn't realize that while he was trying to break my spirit, he was teaching me how to observe every weakness in his empire."

"I survived because I never believed I belonged to your rotten world, Victoria."

Victoria chuckled, a dry, venomous sound that echoed through the vast private office.

"You poor, naive girl," she sneered, pointing her manicured finger toward the panoramic window overlooking Lower Manhattan.

"You think surviving makes you victorious?"

"At midnight, the private militia at Vance Tower will finalize the digital asset liquidation under emergency judicial order."

"The world will wake up to headlines explaining that Marcus Vance murdered Arthur in an inheritance dispute, and Claire Vance vanished in grief."

"By the time the coroner finishes sorting the ashes, my offshore consortium will own every patent, pharmaceutical license, and real estate holding your mother built."

"You have no proof, no allies, and twelve minutes before my security detail enters this room to clean up Arthur’s mess."

I pulled Arthur’s USB drive from my pocket and placed it squarely in the center of her legal blotter.

"Check your tablet, Victoria."

She glanced down at her tablet screen, her aristocratic composure finally shattering into sheer, unadulterated panic.

The red timer had disappeared, replaced by a live feed of the New York Stock Exchange emergency halt board.

Trading on every Vance subsidiary had been frozen by federal regulators citing unsealed evidence of racketeering and treason.

Below the stock ticker, a live video feed from Vance Tower showed federal marshals and FBI tactical teams swarming the lobby.

The private mercenaries Victoria had hired were already being forced to their knees, their weapons stripped and zip-ties locking their wrists.

"Project Scapegoat wasn't just Arthur’s journal, Victoria," I said, leaning closer until she could see her own terrified reflection in my green eyes.

"It was a twenty-five-year legal indictment signed by Arthur under oath, preserved in escrow to ensure you could never betray him."

"He knew you would kill him the moment he served his purpose, so he gave me the trigger."
