Chapter 60 - The Sovereign’s Refusal

I stared at the black detonator resting in Madeline's outstretched hand.

The room fell so quiet that the faint, rhythmic hum of the bunker's air filtration system sounded like a deafening roar.

Behind me, I could hear Marcus shifting his weight, his breathing steady, waiting for my signal.

On the holographic screen, Arthur leaned his head against the cold concrete wall, looking like a ghost of the man who had once terrified me.

Eleanor was weeping into her hands, stripped of the diamonds and high-society arrogance that had defined her existence.

And Chloe—the girl who had taken my birthday, my family, and my home—looked like a pathetic stray shivering in the rain.

A strange, profound calm descended over my mind.

All my life, I had believed that power was about domination.

I had believed that winning meant crushing my enemies until not even their ashes remained.

I had studied their cruelty, memorized their malice, and turned myself into a weapon to destroy them.

And standing before me was the true architect of that weapon, waiting for me to pull the trigger and become her identical twin.

I looked up from the detonator and met Madeline’s expectant, cold green eyes.

"You spent twenty-five years engineering me into a monster," I said, my voice quiet, clear, and ringing with absolute finality.

"You tore my life apart to see if I would bleed ice."

"And I almost did."

I reached out my hand.

Madeline smiled, a triumphant flash of victory illuminating her face as she prepared to release the device into my palm.

Instead of taking the detonator, my hand shot forward like a viper.

I grabbed the master briefcase from the table and slammed its heavy aluminum lid shut with a deafening crash.

Before Madeline could react, I swept my foot out, kicking the delicate tea table directly into her shins.

The porcelain shattered, hot tea splashing across her immaculate trousers as she stumbled backward against the mahogany cabinet.

"Claire!" she gasped, shock and fury twisting her features into an ugly mask.

"Marcus, code black!" I yelled, pulling a thumb-sized sovereign scrambler from my coat pocket and jamming it directly into the master interface port on the briefcase lid.

"Copy that!" Marcus shouted, pulling two flash-bang canisters from his vest and tossing them across the marble floor.

A blinding white flare and a concussive shockwave ripped through the underground parlor, shattering the antique lamps and plunging the chamber into flashing emergency red lights.

The automated siren began to wail, a mechanical voice echoing through the bunker: "SECURITY BREACH. CITADEL LOCKDOWN PROTOCOL INITIATED."

Madeline recovered in seconds, lunging toward a hidden panel behind the cabinet, her face contorted with predatory rage.

"You insolent, sentimental little fool!" she screamed above the sirens.

"You think mercy is strength?!"

"I gave you life, and I gave you an empire!"

"You gave me a nightmare," I shouted back, holding the sealed briefcase tight against my chest.

"I destroyed Arthur because he was a criminal."

"I stripped Eleanor because she was a thief."

"I left Chloe with nothing because she took what wasn't hers."

"The law will hold them in the dark for the rest of their miserable lives."

"I don't need to butcher them in secret like a coward in a bunker to prove I am strong!"

"You won't leave this mountain alive!" Madeline hissed, slamming her palm onto an emergency red console on the wall.

Heavy blast doors began to slide down over the elevator shaft.

"Marcus, now!" I roared.

Marcus fired a tactical grappling hook through the closing gap of the blast doors, its titanium anchor catching the edge of the elevator frame above.

He grabbed me by the waist, engaging the high-torque motorized winch on his tactical harness.

The cable ripped us upward off the floor just as a hail of automated perimeter fire chewed through the tiles where we had been standing.

We shot through the closing blast doors into the elevator shaft, leaving Madeline standing below in the strobe of the red warning lights.

Looking down through the reinforced glass grate, I saw my mother staring up at me.

She wasn't screaming anymore.

A slow, terrifying, chilling smile spread across her face as she watched us ascend into the darkness.

"Run then, Claire!" her voice echoed over the facility's master intercom, vibrating through the steel cables around us.

"Take the London vault!"

"Take the deep clearing codes!"

"Every sovereign family on this planet will hunt you for what's in that box!"

"Let us see how long your precious morality lasts when the rest of the Court comes to bleed you dry!"

The cable pulled us up into the roaring mountain air as the ruins of Cairncastle exploded into emergency floodlights.

The true war hadn't ended with Arthur Vance.

The true sovereign war had just been declared.
