Chapter 39 - Ashes of the Dynasty

The explosion tore through the south wing of St. Jude's Memorial just as I leaped through the fire doors into the concrete stairwell.

The blast wave threw me down half a flight of stairs, slamming my head against the steel handrail. Darkness threatened to pull me under, but the frantic hands of Marcus and two paramedics grabbed my arms, dragging me into the freezing drizzle of the dawn.

Behind us, black smoke billowed into the morning sky above Boston, carrying the ashes of Arthur Vance and the woman who had made my life a living hell.

Two days later.

The private burn unit at Massachusetts General Hospital was guarded by six federal marshals. Chloe sat in a wheelchair by the window, her head wrapped in thick sterile bandages, her eyes vacant as she stared out at the Charles River.

I stood beside her, my neck bandaged, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that concealed the bruising across my collarbones.

"The district attorney reviewed the evidence from the greenhouse cellar," I said quietly, setting a cup of tea on the table beside her. "The medical documents, the death certificate of Clarissa Vance, and the private clinic records."

Chloe didn't look at me. Her voice was barely a whisper, stripped of every trace of the haughty, cruel heiress who had ridiculed me on my twenty-fifth birthday.

"Julian took a plea deal yesterday," she said, her lip trembling. "Fifteen years in state prison for corporate fraud and aiding Eleanor’s escape. He cried like a baby in the holding cell."

"And you?" I asked.

Chloe looked down at her hands, scarred, without a single diamond ring. "The judge granted me immunity in exchange for my testimony regarding Eleanor’s hidden shell corporations. But there's nothing left, Claire. No trust fund. No estate. The bank took the townhouses. The country club canceled our memberships."

She turned her bruised face toward me, tears spilling silently down her cheeks. "Why didn't you let her kill me? I threw wine in your face. I told you that you were nothing but a parasite living off our father's generosity. Why save me?"

"Because leaving you to die in that fire would have made me Eleanor," I said, my voice steady, stripped of all hatred, leaving only cold, hard reality in its wake. "I won't let her ghost dictate who I become. You have a chance to work, Chloe. To live like an ordinary human being without a name to hide behind. Don't waste it."

I turned and walked toward the door.

"Claire," Chloe called out, her voice cracking.

I paused, hand on the brass doorknob.

"Eleanor gave me a silver key before she struck me with that bar," Chloe whispered, reaching into the pocket of her hospital gown and holding out a small, blood-stained safe deposit key numbered *704*. "She told me if she didn't survive, I was supposed to take it to the Manhattan Central Vault. She said whatever is inside that box... it's the reason Arthur never let you leave the family."
