Chapter 41 - The Sixty-Minute Gallows

The heavy steel vault door slammed shut with a deafening hydraulic screech that vibrated through the soles of my shoes.

The electronic lock engaged with three distinct, sickening thuds of hardened titanium deadbolts sliding into concrete.

On the steel table, the black glass screen of Marcus’s satellite phone pulsed with an ominous, blood-red digital timer: fifty-nine minutes and fifty-two seconds.

The message remained burned into the display like a death sentence: Eliminate Marcus Vance within sixty minutes, or your flagship tower falls.

Air conditioning vents in the ceiling abruptly cut off, plunging the underground chamber into a suffocating, tomb-like stillness.

Marcus stepped back until his shoulders hit the reinforced wall, his breathing ragged and his knuckles whitening around his flashlight.

He looked at the screen, then at the letter Arthur had left behind, and finally into my eyes with raw, animal terror.

"Claire, listen to me," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling beneath the weight of twenty-five years of orchestrated lies.

"I didn't know about the syndicate, I swear to God I didn't know Arthur was grooming you for them."

I stood motionless beneath the harsh emergency lights, holding the photograph of my mother and the Chief Justice in my cold hands.

Every birthday dinner they canceled, every holiday they locked me in the attic, and every cruel laugh Eleanor aimed at me had been calculated.

They had not abused me out of sheer malice; they had beaten me down like raw iron in a furnace to forge a weapon for their shadow board.

"Arthur didn't build this family on hatred, Marcus," I said, my voice dropping to a terrifying, steady pitch.

"He built it on torture, and you were the obedient guard who watched the door while they sharpened the blade."

Marcus swallowed hard, tears welling in the corners of his bruised eyes as he stared at the red digits ticking relentlessly downward.

"Then kill me," he choked out, sliding down the cold wall until his knees hit the concrete floor.

"Eleanor burned down the hospital, Arthur is dead, and the board will level your tower with four hundred innocent employees inside if you don't."

"Do it, Claire. Take the gun from Arthur’s lockbox and put a bullet in my head so you can claim your mother’s seat."

I walked over to the open lockbox and pulled out the heavy steel revolver Arthur had left resting on top of the bearer bonds.

The cold metal felt heavier than any weapon I had ever held, carrying the accumulated blood of the Vance dynasty.

I pulled back the hammer with a sharp, echoing click, aiming the barrel directly between Marcus’s eyes.

His eyes fluttered shut, his lips moving in a frantic, silent prayer as he waited for the sound of the gunshot.

Fifty-six minutes remained on the digital clock.

I stared at the broken man in front of me—the golden brother who had spent his life basking in the warmth of our father’s false approval.

Arthur had designed this final test knowing that a truly forged weapon would execute Marcus without hesitation to save her empire.

If I pulled the trigger, I would prove Arthur right, completing the transformation from neglected scapegoat into their premier executioner.

"Open your eyes, Marcus," I commanded, my hand remaining perfectly steady.

He opened them slowly, his gaze locked onto the dark muzzle of the gun.

"I spent twenty-five years living in the shadows of your golden pedestal, watching you take everything that was meant to be mine."

"Arthur wanted me to hate you enough to end you in this room."

"He wanted me to trade your blood for a seat at their High Table."

I lowered the barrel, flipped the weapon in my palm, and smashed the heavy grip into the digital lock console beside the door.

Sparks erupted in a violent shower of blue and orange, scorching the concrete and filling the room with the smell of ozone.

"I am not their weapon," I said, meeting his stunned gaze.

"We are breaking out of this tomb together, and we are going to dismantle every single monster who built it."
