Chapter 33 - Bones of the Forgotten Heiress

The beam of my tactical flashlight sliced through the descending dampness of the subterranean vault. Water dripped rhythmically from exposed rebar above, splashing into stagnant puddles that smelled of lime and stagnant bile.

Marcus followed two steps behind me, his weapon raised, the beam of his light trembling slightly as it swept over the subterranean brickwork. "Claire... look at the walls."

The cellar wasn't a wine cellar or a gardening bunker. It was a reinforced fallout shelter from the early sixties that had been converted into something monstrous. Steel chains hung from rusted eyehooks bolted directly into the masonry. There were no windows, no ventilation shafts—only a thick steel blast door that locked from the outside.

And in the center of the room sat an antique, hand-carved mahogany bassinet.

"What is this?" Marcus whispered, his breath clouding in the sub-surface chill. "Arthur told everyone this wing was sealed because of unstable foundations when they built the north terrace."

I stepped forward, my boots splashing through the brackish water. Inside the bassinet lay a weathered, leather-bound hospital dossier stamped with the red wax seal of the Massachusetts Department of Health, dated twenty-eight years ago.

Beneath the file sat an antique silver baby rattle, tarnished nearly black with age. It bore an engraved monogram: *C. V.*

"C. V.," I read aloud, my blood running colder than the damp air. "That's my monogram. But twenty-eight years ago... I wasn't even born yet. I'm twenty-five."

"Open the ledger, Claire," Marcus said, standing guard at the foot of the stairs, his eyes darting toward the shadows.

My trembling fingers opened the cracked leather binding. Inside were certified medical certificates of birth and death.

*Infant: Clarissa Vance.*

*Born: October 14, 1996.*

*Deceased: October 18, 1996.*

*Cause of death: Acute respiratory distress / blunt trauma.*

*Mother: Evelyn Vance.*

My eyes widened as the realization struck like an electric current. Evelyn Vance was Arthur’s first wife, the true heiress to the Vance railroad and shipping empire, who supposedly died in a tragic equestrian accident months before Arthur married Eleanor.

And Clarissa—the first daughter, the real heir—had died in this cellar before she was four days old.

I flipped to the next page. It was a handwritten adoption contract from an illicit private clinic in upstate New York.

*Replacement Child: Female infant, born October 14, 1999. Sourced anonymously. Identity altered to match deceased heiress to preserve trusts and inheritance stipulations established by Evelyn Vance’s family trust.*

"I was never their scapegoat," I whispered, the paper shaking in my hands as the horrific puzzle pieces snapped into place. "I was their forged signature. I was brought in to impersonate a dead infant so Arthur and Eleanor could keep Evelyn’s billions from reverting to her maternal family. They didn't hate me because I was rebellious. They hated me because every time they looked at my face, they saw the child they murdered."

Suddenly, the heavy iron blast door at the top of the stairs slammed shut with a deafening, metallic boom.

The sound of a heavy steel locking bar sliding into place echoed through the chamber, followed by the wet, mocking chuckle of a woman who had just trapped her prey.
