Chapter 29 - The War for the Pentagon Vault

Claire took the key. Her fingers were steady now, driven by a cold, righteous fury that burned hotter than jet fuel.

She unclasped the silver pendant from around her neck. On the back of the emerald-cut housing, she pressed a hidden latch. The metal casing clicked open, revealing a micro-aperture. She slid the tiny silver key into the slot and turned it ninety degrees.

The pendant chimed—a pure, crystalline tone that echoed through the armored room.

A soft blue laser projected from the center of the jewel, bathing Claire’s face in light.

*"Biometric match confirmed: Ellison, Claire. Rear Admiral, USN,"* a synthesized female voice spoke from the pendant’s miniature speaker. *"Ares Protocol unlocked. Full database access granted."*

Claire jammed the pendant’s data lead into the carrier’s hardwired communications terminal.

Instantly, the dead screens roared to life. A massive torrent of data flooded across the monitors: bank account numbers, covert operational orders, offshore arms shipments, and video logs implicating Director Sterling, Vice Admiral Holbrook, and forty-seven high-ranking defense contractors in a conspiracy that spanned three presidential administrations.

Claire flipped open the master override panel on the main console.

"This is Rear Admiral Claire Ellison to all naval stations, fleet commands, and Pentagon Joint Chiefs," she spoke into the open fleet-wide microphone, her voice ringing out across every ship, base, and tactical aircraft within three thousand miles. "I am transmitting the unredacted Ares files over the primary tactical frequency. Director Sterling and his conspirators have committed high treason against the United States. Order all units to stand down and take his personnel into custody immediately."

She hit the transmit key.

The data burst flashed across the global satellite network like an electronic shockwave.

Across the ship, through the heavy bulkheads, they heard the sudden cessation of gunfire. The mercenaries' radios crackled with the frantic voices of their handlers realizing their black-budget accounts had just been frozen by the Treasury Department.

Then, the tactical radar screen in the citadel let out a shrill, piercing alarm.
