Chapter 22 - Breach at Isla de la Sombra

The tropical storm hit the coast like an artillery barrage. Sheets of warm, torrential rain lashed against the windshield of the MH-60M Black Hawk as it skimmed thirty feet above the churning ocean waves, running fully blacked-out.
Claire sat strapped into the jump seat near the open cabin door, night-vision goggles resting on the brim of her helmet. Beside her sat six Tier-One operators, their faces obscured by skull-patterned balaclavas, assault rifles held low across their chests. No one spoke. The red interior jump-lights bathed the cabin in the color of fresh arterial blood.
"One minute to target!" the crew chief shouted over the roar of the twin turbine engines. "Thermal imaging shows eight hostiles moving through the courtyard. Armed with FN SCARs and night-vision optics. These aren't local cartel thugs, Admiral. These are private military contractors. Ex-special mission unit guys."
"Sterling’s mercenaries," Claire said through the bone-conduction headset. "Director Sterling’s cleanup crew from the Pentagon's black-budget division. They aren't here to capture Julian. They’re here to erase him, the child, and every trace of the Ares Protocol."
She adjusted the strap of her tactical vest, checking the magazine well of her compact carbine. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her hands were entirely steady.
The helicopter flared hard over a rocky clearing behind a sprawling, Spanish-colonial fortress perched on a seaside cliff. The wheels barely kissed the muddy turf before Claire hit the release harness and rolled out into the driving storm.
"Go! Go! Go!" Miller’s harsh whisper sounded over the squad net.
Claire moved with fluid, lethal economy. She took the point position, leading the team through the breach in the perimeter wall where an iron gate hung twisted on its hinges. Spent brass casings littered the cobblestones, glittering under the flashes of distant lightning. Bodies in unmarked grey tactical uniforms lay scattered across the terrace—Julian’s handiwork. The mafia boss had fought like a cornered wolf.
They reached the heavy mahogany doors of the inner courtyard. They had been blown inward by breaching charges.
Inside, the stench of cordite, blood, and burning electronics hung thick in the humid air.
"Clear right!" Miller hissed, sweeping his weapon across the shattered grand salon.
"Clear left!"
Claire moved down the hallway, her boots silent on the blood-slicked terracotta tiles. She followed a crimson trail of handprints smeared along the white plaster wall. Someone had been dragging themselves forward, leaning heavily against the partition to stay upright.
Then, from behind a heavy iron cellar door at the end of the corridor, she heard it.
A tiny, breathless hiccup. A small, shuddering whimper of sheer terror.
"Hold your fire!" Claire commanded, throwing up a clenched fist.
She stepped toward the door, her weapon lowered just an inch. "Julian?" she called out, her voice cutting through the dark with absolute clarity. "Julian, it's Claire."
A sharp metallic click sounded from the other side of the heavy wood—the distinct sound of a grenade pin being pulled.

"Step into the doorway where I can see your shadow," Julian’s voice emerged from the gloom, ragged, slurred, but dripping with lethal intent. "If you're one of Sterling’s dogs, I’m taking this entire bunker to hell with us."
