Chapter 25 - The USS Invictus Lockdown

"Clear!"

The electric jolt slammed Julian’s chest off the steel deck of the *USS Invictus* medical bay. The primary surgical suite aboard the supercarrier was a sterile hive of bright fluorescent lights, stainless steel, and masked naval surgeons working furiously beneath the hum of industrial air scrubbers.

Claire stood on the other side of the observation glass, her uniform stripped of mud, dressed now in fresh navy blue operational utilities. Leo sat on her hip, wrapped in a warm fleece blanket stamped with the Navy anchor insignia. The child had refused to let anyone else touch him; the moment a nurse had reached out, Leo had shrieked with such violent terror that Claire had simply ordered the medical staff to step aside.

He was drinking warm formula from a hospital-grade bottle, his chubby fingers twined securely into the silver chain around Claire’s neck.

Through the glass, the heart monitor picked up a steady, rhythmic beep.

"Rhythm restored," Chief Medical Officer Captain Bradley announced, pulling off his bloody latex gloves and stepping through the pneumatic doors into the observation corridor. "He's stable, Admiral. The bullet grazed his femoral artery—half an inch to the left and he would have bled out before your bird cleared the Colombian coast. He’s tough. Tougher than any civilian I’ve ever seen."

"He’s not a civilian, Doctor," Claire said quietly. "He’s a ghost."

Before Bradley could respond, the heavy steel security doors at the end of the corridor hissed open.

Four armed master-at-arms stepped through, sidearms holstered but hands resting tensely on their duty belts. Behind them walked Director Sterling of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Sterling was a man in his late fifties, dressed in an impeccably pressed charcoal civilian suit that seemed absurdly out of place aboard an active warship. His face was sharp, bloodless, his eyes carrying the predatory chill of a bureaucrat who traded human lives like stock options.

"Admiral Ellison," Sterling said, his voice smooth and devoid of warmth. "Congratulations on your field promotion. It seems, however, that your sudden elevation in rank has confused your understanding of chain of command."

Claire didn't turn around. She kept her eyes fixed on Julian’s unconscious form through the glass, her hand gently stroking Leo’s back. "You're out of your jurisdiction, Sterling. This carrier is sovereign naval territory."

"Not when it harbors an international fugitive and an unregistered biological asset," Sterling countered, taking a step closer. He gestured toward the child in Claire's arms. "That infant is classified property under Project Ares, authorized by executive order. And Julian Vance is a state enemy scheduled for rendition to a black site in Poland."

Leo seemed to sense the venom in the man's tone; he dropped the bottle, whimpering softly and burying his head against Claire's shoulder.

Claire turned slowly. Her expression was completely devoid of emotion—a terrifying, freezing stillness that made even the armed guards shuffle uncomfortably.

"Did you order the strike on that compound, Sterling?" she asked softly.

"I authorized the neutralization of an unsecured intelligence leak," Sterling said without blinking. "And now, Admiral, you will hand over the child, and you will surrender the prisoner to my transport team. That is a direct order from the National Security Advisor."

Claire looked past Sterling, directly at the Master-at-Arms detachment. "Master Chief."

The senior naval guard stiffened. "Yes, Admiral?"

"Escort Director Sterling to the secondary brig. Place him under armed guard for treason, conspiracy to commit murder against sovereign naval personnel, and unauthorized deployment of foreign mercenaries against American officers."

Sterling’s face turned crimson. "Are you insane?! You cannot arrest a DIA Director! I have clearance beyond your wildest imagination!"

Claire took a single step toward him, her silver rank star catching the fluorescent glare.

"On this warship, Sterling, my word is the law. Touch this child, or take one more step toward that ICU room, and I will have my security detail throw you off the flight deck into forty thousand feet of open water." She leaned in, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "Try me."
