Chapter 28 - The Safe Room Confession

They reached the armored citadel on the eighth level of the carrier's island superstructure just as a team of four mercenaries opened fire from the stairwell.
Bullets sparked wildly against the reinforced steel bulkheads. Claire spun around the corner, firing controlled three-round bursts that suppressed the attackers, while Julian, leaning against the emergency hatch, slammed his shoulder into the secondary locking wheel, spinning the heavy brass dog-latches into place.
*CLANG-CLANG-CLANG.*
The two-inch-thick vault door sealed shut. The muffled sound of bullets hammering the outside plating vibrated through the metal, but the steel held.
Inside the small, utilitarian bunker, the only light came from the auxiliary communication monitors glowing green on the central console.
Julian collapsed to the floor, gasping for air, his hand pressed against his torn wound. The pain was etched into every line of his aristocratic face, but his eyes never left Claire.
Claire laid Leo down on the padded navigator’s chair, tucking a combat blanket tightly around him. The boy was shivering, his little eyes darting nervously around the dim vault, but he didn't cry. He looked at Claire, his small fingers reaching out to touch her hand.
"Stay here, Leo," she whispered, kissing his forehead softly. "Just a few more minutes."
She turned back to Julian, dropping to her knees beside him, ripping open a fresh pack of combat gauze to pack the tear in his leg.
"You're an idiot, Vance," she said, her voice shaking slightly despite her best efforts to maintain military composure. "You should have stayed in the medical bay."
Julian reached up, his bloody, calloused fingers catching her wrist. His touch was warm, surprisingly gentle for a man whose name made billionaires tremble.
"I spent my entire life building an empire of blood, Claire," he whispered, looking directly into her emerald eyes. "I thought power was the only thing that could keep me safe from the monsters who killed my family. But when you walked into my house... when you held Leo while my hands were shaking with rage... I realized I was nothing more than a prisoner of my own ghost."
Claire froze, her breath hitching in her throat as she felt the pulse in his fingers against her skin.
"Julian..."
"Don't interrupt me, Ellison," he murmured, a faint, devastatingly genuine smile curving his lips. "I may not make it off this ship. But you need to know this. I didn't fall for the nanny. I didn't fall for the cover identity. I fell for the woman who looked into the abyss of my world and refused to look away."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, blood-smeared silver key—an exact match to the lock concealed beneath the setting of Claire's pendant.
May you like
"Put the key in the pendant, Claire," Julian whispered. "End their war. Take command."
