Chapter 24 - Red Sky Extraction

"Hostiles approaching from the tree line!" Miller’s voice barked over the radio, punctuated by the sharp *crack-crack-crack* of suppressed carbines engaging targets in the courtyard above. "Two technicals with mounted fifties just breached the outer perimeter! Admiral, we need to move NOW!"
"Pack the wound!" Claire ordered Miller’s combat medic, who had dropped beside Julian with a field trauma kit. "QuikClot and pressure bandage on the thigh. Hit him with a hundred micrograms of fentanyl and get him on the litter!"
"Admiral, he can’t walk," the medic shouted over the mounting gunfire.
"Then carry him!" Claire barked, snapping Leo into an armored front-carrier harness strapped tightly across her chest, securing the baby beneath her ballistic vest so that only his head peeked out. Leo whimpered at the sudden movement, but Claire’s hand remained pressed firmly against the back of his neck, murmuring a steady, low hum that kept the infant calm amidst the chaos.
They burst out of the cellar just as a heavy .50-caliber round chewed through the upper balcony, showering them with pulverized stone and plaster.
Claire raised her carbine with one hand, bracing the stock against her shoulder while her left arm shielded the child. A mercenary in a grey tactical balaclava rounded the corner of the colonnade, bringing a shotgun to bear. Claire squeezed the trigger twice. Two rounds caught the operative dead center in his chest plate, driving him backward into the rain-slicked courtyard.
"Out the back! To the LZ!" Claire commanded.
The team sprinted across the ruined gardens, cutting through the driving deluge. The twin rotors of the Black Hawk beat the humid air into a swirling vortex of mud and mist, its mini-guns scanning the tree line.
A rocket-propelled grenade streaked out from the jungle canopy, trailing a corkscrew of grey smoke.
"RPG! Drop!" Miller roared.
The rocket slammed into the stone gazebo twenty yards to their left, the shockwave knocking Claire to one knee. She twisted her body instinctively, taking the brunt of the flying gravel on her back and shoulders, curling her torso completely over the baby.
Leo let out a sharp shriek of terror, but his skin was untouched.
Julian, strapped to the tactical litter carried by two operators, let out a guttural roar of defiance through his haze of agony, struggling against the restraints as if he could shield them with his own dying body.
"Get them aboard!" Claire screamed, scrambling back to her feet and shoving the litter into the cabin of the hovering helicopter.
She vaulted into the bay just as the door gunner opened up with the M134 minigun. A continuous, roaring beam of red tracer fire shredded the jungle edge, obliterating the mercenary technical in a secondary explosion of fuel and ammunition.
The Black Hawk’s nose dipped violently, pulling up and away from the burning cliffside estate, banking hard out over the open ocean toward international waters.
Inside the cabin, Claire collapsed against the bulkhead, her chest heaving. Leo was trembling against her chest, his little face pressed into her neck, soaking her tactical shirt with his tears.
Across the cabin, Julian’s eyes rolled back into his head, his monitor flatlining on the medic's portable vitals screen.

"He's coding!" the medic shouted, reaching for the defibrillator paddles. "V-tach! We're losing him!"
