Chapter 26 - The Traitor in the Brass

The door to the secure debriefing room slammed shut, sealing Claire inside with the holographic console. On the encrypted display, hundreds of financial transactions, offshore shell corporations, and military procurement files drifted in glowing blue text.

Beside her, leaning heavily on a pair of aluminum crutches with his hospital gown covered by a heavy wool Navy cardigan, stood Julian Vance. His face was pale, his movements agonizingly slow, but his eyes were sharp, calculating, and burningly alive.

Leo was asleep on a leather sofa in the corner of the room, wrapped securely in Claire’s operational jacket, the steady rise and fall of his chest the only peaceful sound in the entire vessel.

"Look at the routing numbers," Julian said, his voice gravelly as he pointed a bruised finger at the floating ledger. "The Moretti syndicate never worked for the street cartels, Claire. My father, your father... they were never rivals. They were partners."

Claire stared at the display, her pulse thumping in her ears. "My father was a three-star admiral who died in a submarine accident off the coast of Barents Sea."

"That's the lie they fed you to keep you inside the naval pipeline," Julian said, turning his gaze toward her. "Your father didn't die in an accident. He was the chief architect of the Ares Protocol—a decentralized digital vault designed to hold the names of every corrupt official, intelligence director, and senator on the payroll of the global defense contractors. When he realized that Vice Admiral Holbrook and Sterling were planning to sell the system to an offshore cabal, he locked it."

Julian reached out, his thumb gently brushing the silver pendant resting on Claire’s collar.

"The encryption key requires a dual-factor biometric authorization. It was coded to your mother’s DNA line. You, Claire."

Claire’s breath caught in her throat. She looked down at the intricate silver engravings on the pendant—patterns she had traced with her thumb since she was six years old. "And Leo?"

Julian’s eyes softened, a deep, devastating sorrow flickering across his aristocratic features.

"Leo isn't my late wife's child, Claire," Julian murmured.

The room seemed to drop ten degrees. Claire stared at him, her lips parted in disbelief. "What did you say?"

"My wife died three years ago of leukemia. We had no children," Julian confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "Ten months ago, a private clinic in Geneva was raided by Sterling’s hit squad. They had harvested an embryo created twenty-four years ago by your mother before she died—frozen in a military cryo-vault under your father's directive. Sterling wanted an heir with your bloodline to bypass the secondary Ares lock. I intercepted the transport convoy. I took the baby. I raised him as my own flesh and blood to keep him off the DIA’s satellite tracking."

Julian took a trembling step closer, looking into Claire’s stunned, wide eyes.

"He isn't my son, Claire. He’s your younger brother. And the moment he saw your name tag at Pine Street... the moment he touched your pendant... he knew his sister had finally come home."
