Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at Vance Manor

Ten miles away, in the decaying grandeur of the Montgomery estate, Eleanor Montgomery sat at her antique vanity, sipping black coffee while refreshing her phone.
For the first two hours of the morning, Eleanor had been gloating. Madison’s live broadcast had gained over a million new followers. Several gossip networks were already offering six-figure sums for exclusive sit-down interviews. Eleanor had envisioned a massive settlement check from Ethan Vance—twenty, maybe thirty million dollars just to make the lawsuit go away.
Then, the clock struck 8:15 AM.
Eleanor’s phone began ringing uncontrollably. It wasn't reporters asking for interviews; it was her primary creditor, demanding immediate repayment of a four-million-dollar balloon payment due that morning.
Before she could answer, Madison burst into the bedroom, her face pale as a ghost, her hands shaking so violently she dropped her phone onto the rug.
"Mother! Look at Twitter! Look at the news!" Madison shrieked, her voice cracking with hysteria. "He released the footage! All of it! The nursery... the pool... the emails! Mother, how did he get the emails?!"
Eleanor snatched the phone from the floor. Her eyes widened in absolute horror as she saw her own face plastered on the front page of CNN, accompanied by the headline: *SOCIALITE MATRIARCH AND INFLUENCER DAUGHTER FACE CHARGES FOR CHILD CRUELTY.*
"No... no, this is impossible!" Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest. "He couldn't have had cameras in the hallway! That's illegal!"
Suddenly, the heavy roar of car engines echoed from the long driveway outside the manor.
Madison ran to the window, pulling back the heavy velvet drapes.
Two black Cadillac Escalades had pulled up in front of the fountain. Following right behind them were four marked county sheriff patrol cars, their red and blue lights flashing silently against the morning mist.
Ethan Vance stepped out of the first Escalade. He wore an impeccably tailored black overcoat, looking like an avenging titan. Beside him was Arthur Vance, holding an official court briefcase.
"He's here," Madison whimpered, backing away from the window, tears of true, unadulterated panic streaming down her cheeks. "Mother, what do we do? What do we do?!"
"Get a grip on yourself!" Eleanor snapped, though her own knees were trembling. "He can't intimidate us! We are the Montgomerys! We have connections!"
Downstairs, the front doors were pushed open. Ethan didn't break them down; the local sheriff’s deputies used a master warrant to unlock the deadbolts. The sound of heavy tactical boots resonated across the marble foyer.
Ethan walked into the grand parlor, his presence instantly draining all the air from the room.
Madison and Eleanor came down the spiral stairs, Eleanor attempting to maintain a facade of aristocratic dignity, while Madison hid behind her mother like a frightened animal.
"Ethan Vance," Eleanor barked, her voice wavering. "You have no right to trespass on private property! I will have you arrested!"
The lead sheriff stepped forward, unhooking a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Eleanor Montgomery? Madison Montgomery? I have a warrant for your arrest issued by the Superior Court of the State of California."
Madison let out a high-pitched scream. "What?! On what charges?! Ethan, please! It was a misunderstanding! I love Sophie! You know I love her!"
Ethan looked at Madison. His eyes were cold, dead voids of total detachment.
"You told my daughter her mother died because of her," Ethan said softly. The quietness of his voice was far more terrifying than any roar. "You told her I was going to abandon her in Switzerland. You tied her hands like an animal."
"I was stressed! The wedding... the pressure was too much!" Madison sobbed, dropping to her knees on the stairs, crawling forward toward Ethan’s polished shoes. "Ethan, please! Don't do this to me! I’ll lose everything! My career, my reputation, my life!"

"You didn't have a life, Madison," Ethan replied coldly. "You had a parasite's scheme. And it ends today."
