Chapter 4 - Ghost in the Nursery

The interior footage was in black-and-white night vision, dated two weeks prior, at 11:42 PM.
Ethan had been in Tokyo for a three-day logistics summit. He had left Sophie in the care of Mrs. Gable, but Madison had insisted on staying at the mansion to "bond with her future daughter." Ethan had thought it was a sweet, maternal gesture.
The camera showed the hallway outside Sophie’s bedroom.
The door swung open, and Madison stepped into the room. She wasn't wearing makeup; her hair was pulled back, her face stripped of the warm, glamorous influencer persona. She carried a tablet in her hand.
Ethan switched the feed to the bedroom’s hidden audio sensor.
"Are you asleep, Sophie?" Madison’s voice was a low, terrifying whisper.
The covers on the small bed rustled. Sophie sat up, pulling her teddy bear to her chin. "Madison? Where is Mrs. Gable?"
"I sent her home early," Madison lied smoothly, stepping closer to the bed. "She doesn't work for you anymore. Nobody works for you. When your daddy marries me, things are going to change around here."
"I want Daddy," Sophie sobbed softly.
"Your daddy is tired of you," Madison said, her words calculated, venomous darts meant to pierce a child's soul. "He spends all his time working because coming home to you is exhausting. Do you know why your real mother died, Sophie? Because being your mother was too much work."
"Stop!" Ethan roared in his study, slamming his fist onto the mahogany desk. The monitors shook. Tears of sheer, blinding rage blurred his vision. "Stop the tape!"
Marcus immediately paused the video. The frame froze on Madison’s face—a sneering, sadistic grin hovering over the frightened little girl.
"She told my daughter... she told her that her mother died because of her?" Ethan’s voice shook with an intensity that made the hardened ex-federal agent step back.
"She systematically broke her down, Ethan," Marcus said softly. "The nursery logs show Madison entered that room four different times while you were in Japan. She took away Sophie’s toys. She threatened to lock her in the wine cellar if she told you a single word. She told her that if she cried to you, you would leave both of them forever."
Ethan walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the darkened grounds. The shattered floral arch was still visible in the moonlight, a pathetic ruin of vanity and cruelty.
For six months, Ethan had believed Madison was a blessing. After the tragic passing of his wife three years ago from illness, he had poured his life into Sophie and his business. Madison had appeared like an angel—warm, affectionate, patient with Sophie during their public outings, constantly posting about "the joys of blended families" to her three million followers.
It had all been a performance. A calculated, psychopathic charade to secure a ring, a mansion, and a billion-dollar family trust.
Ethan pulled his smartphone from his pocket. He dialed a number he rarely used—the private line to Arthur Vance, his lead corporate counsel and the most feared litigator on the West Coast.
The phone rang twice before Arthur answered. "Ethan? I’ve seen the alerts on Twitter. Madison’s PR agency is already drafting a narrative. They're claiming you were physically aggressive at the engagement party."
"Arthur," Ethan said, his voice flat, emotionless, dead. "Cancel the prenuptial agreement. Cancel the private trust allocations we set up in Madison Montgomery’s name. And prepare a criminal complaint."
There was a pause on the line. "On what grounds, Ethan?"
"Felony child abuse. Unlawful restraint. Intentional infliction of emotional distress." Ethan turned back to the frozen monitor displaying Madison’s cruel smile. "And Arthur? I don't want a settlement. I want her entirely destroyed. I want her name erased from every contract, every brand deal, and every social circle in this country."

"Understood," Arthur replied without hesitation. "Consider the war started."
