Chapter 10 - Dawn of Reckoning and Healing

Three months later.
The morning breeze off the Pacific Ocean carried the fresh, salty scent of the tide across the private cliffside terrace of the Blackwood mansion. The patio, once the scene of humiliating cruelty and shattered glass, had been completely redesigned.
The cold marble flagstones had been replaced with warm, natural cedar decking. The deep, imposing swimming pool now featured a sun-drenched shallow splash pad surrounded by lush lavender bushes, Japanese maples, and vibrant sunflowers that swayed gently in the wind.
Sophie sat at a wooden picnic table, her tongue sticking out slightly in deep concentration as she used bright yellow and blue watercolors to paint a picture of a golden retriever. Her cheeks had regained their rosy, healthy color. Her laughter, once stolen by fear, now echoed freely across the lawn.
Mrs. Gable walked out onto the deck, setting down a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies and two glasses of cold milk.
"Here you go, sunshine," the housekeeper said with a warm smile, kissing Sophie’s forehead.
"Thank you, Mrs. Gable!" Sophie chimed, grabbing a cookie before turning to look at the glass doors.
Ethan stepped out onto the terrace. He wore comfortable jeans and a casual linen shirt, having stepped back from his grueling eighty-hour workweeks to personally handle the logistics firm from his home office.
"How’s the masterpiece coming, Soph?" Ethan asked, sitting down on the bench beside her and pulling her into a warm, one-armed hug.
Sophie beamed, showing him the paper. "It's Barnaby. The dog we're adopting from the shelter on Saturday!"
"He looks very handsome," Ethan said, tapping the wet paper gently. "Though I think his tail needs a little more blue."
"Dogs don't have blue tails, Daddy!" Sophie giggled, nudging him with her elbow.
Ethan chuckled, wrapping his arms fully around her and resting his chin on her soft hair.
Earlier that morning, Arthur Vance had sent the final legal report. Madison Montgomery had accepted a plea bargain: eight years in state custody without the possibility of early parole for the first five. Eleanor had received six years for conspiracy and fraud. The Montgomery name was erased from the high-society registries, remembered only as a cautionary tale of greed and arrogance.
None of that mattered to Ethan anymore. The war was won, but the real victory was sitting right here in front of him—the sound of his daughter’s carefree laughter, the safety that enveloped their home, and the unbreakable bond between a father and his child.
Ethan looked out across the shimmering expanse of the Pacific, where the morning sun was rising high into an unclouded sky.
"Daddy?" Sophie asked quietly, leaning her head against his chest.
"Yes, baby?"
"Are we always going to be happy like this?"
May you like
Ethan kissed her forehead, his voice filled with the absolute, unwavering promise of a father who had walked through hell to protect her.
"Always, Sophie," Ethan said softly. "From now on, nothing in this world is ever going to hurt you again."
