Chapter 2 - The Digital Archive

The interior of the Blackwood mansion was warm, smelling of polished mahogany and vanilla, a stark contrast to the predatory chill outside. Ethan carried Sophie straight up the grand spiral staircase, his boots leaving faint wet prints on the Persian runner.

"Mrs. Gable!" Ethan called out, his voice sharp and steady.

The housekeeper, a motherly woman in her late fifties who had been with Ethan since Sophie was born, rushed out of the master suite with a stack of thick, heated towels. When she saw Sophie’s soaked hair and bruised wrists, she gasped, pressing a hand to her mouth.

"Dear Lord in heaven... Mr. Ethan, what happened out there?"

"Draw a warm bath. Add eucalyptus oil," Ethan instructed calmly, though his jaw muscles clenched until they ached. "Bring her the lavender pajamas—the thick fleece ones. And make sure the tea with honey is ready."

Ethan personally carried Sophie into the adjoining bathroom. He peeled away the ruined, soaked lace dress, his heart tearing into pieces at how frail his daughter felt. He lowered her into the steaming tub, gently washing the chlorinated pool water and grime from her hair. Sophie didn't cry loudly; she wept in silent, shuddering gasps, holding onto Ethan’s forearm with both hands as if she feared he might vanish into thin air.

"Daddy’s here, Soph. Daddy’s right here. You’re safe now. No one is ever going to hurt you again," Ethan whispered, kissing the crown of her wet head repeatedly.

"Madison said... she said you were going to send me to a boarding school in Switzerland," Sophie choked out, her bottom lip trembling violently. "She said once she was my mommy, you wouldn't have time for me anymore because she was going to give you real babies."

A cold, bottomless rage erupted in Ethan’s gut, but he kept his hands completely steady. He reached for a soft washcloth and wiped her cheeks. "Madison lied to you, Sophie. You are my only girl. You are my whole world. Nobody is sending you anywhere. And Madison will never set foot inside this house again."

After Sophie was dried, clothed in her warmest pajamas, and tucked under a heavy down comforter with her favorite stuffed bear, Mrs. Gable took a seat beside the bed, softly humming a lullaby. Only then did Ethan step out of the bedroom, his eyes shifting from the tenderness of a father to the calculated fury of an apex predator.

He marched down the long hallway toward his private study at the far end of the eastern wing.

Waiting outside the double oak doors was Marcus Cole, Ethan’s head of private security and a former federal investigator. Marcus held a sleek black tablet in his hands, his face grim.

"The patio is cleared," Marcus reported immediately as Ethan led him into the study. "I had local security escort the Montgomery women off the perimeter. Eleanor threatened a lawsuit. Madison threw a tantrum in the driveway, kicking the side panels of her own town car before they sped off."

Ethan walked behind his massive mahogany desk and pulled out a fresh, dry shirt from his private wardrobe, changing without a word. "What about the guests?"

"Compliance is at eighty-five percent and climbing," Marcus replied, plugging a high-speed flash drive into Ethan’s workstation. "Once they realized the legal implications—and once they remembered who signs their venture capital checks—they started dumping everything onto the secure server we set up. We’ve received sixty-four individual video files, twelve livestreams ripped directly from Instagram and TikTok, and nearly three hundred high-resolution photos."

Ethan sat down, the blue light of three ultra-wide monitors illuminating his chiseled, exhausted face. "I need you to run the house security footage alongside the guests' recordings. Time-sync everything. I want every angle."

"Why the guests' phones, Ethan?" Marcus asked, leaning over the desk. "Our security cameras cover the patio."

"The mansion cameras cover wide angles from high perches," Ethan explained, his voice chillingly analytical. "They don't capture audio clearly near the pool cabana. But those influencers? They record in 4K with directional microphones. They film close-ups. Madison didn't just snap today, Marcus. When I looked into Sophie's eyes... that wasn't the terror of a child who just had an accident. That was weeks of terror breaking to the surface."

Marcus nodded grimly. He tapped a few commands into his tablet, and the monitors flashed to life, displaying a multi-cam timeline synced to the millisecond.

"Start forty-five minutes before I walked out the door," Ethan ordered. "Show me everything."
