Chapter 38 - The Red Breach

Gunfire erupted from the concrete hallway outside the command center, rapid and muffled through the soundproof steel doors.
Director Vance immediately drew a custom .45 caliber pistol from under his coat, chambering a round with practiced, military precision.
"Agent Miller's transport was a diversion," Vance shouted, slamming his palm against the emergency lockdown button on the console.
Thick titanium blast doors began descending from the ceiling, their heavy hydraulic pistons groaning under the strain of the lockdown sequence.
Before the barrier could seal completely, a small metallic canister rolled underneath the descending lip and clattered across the polished concrete.
"Flashbang! Cover your eyes!" I screamed, lunging across the space to knock Clara and the baby to the floor beneath the heavy table.
The detonation was an ear-shattering concussive blast of white light and thunderous pressure that blew out every computer monitor simultaneously.
High-pitched ringing consumed my hearing as blinding smoke filled the bunker, turning the emergency lights into swirling crimson ghosts.
Through the ringing in my ears, I heard the heavy, rhythmic thump of tactical boots advancing into the room through the shattered entrance.
I rolled onto my knees, raising my Glock into the smoke, firing two rounds blindly toward the first shadow advancing through the haze.
A muffled grunt followed, and a heavy body hit the floor, but more shapes were already swarming through the breach like wraiths.
Director Vance fired three precise rounds into the smoke before a burst of submachine gunfire stitched across his chest, driving him back against the wall.
He slumped to the floor, coughing bright red blood, his weapon clattering harmlessly against the tiled baseboards.
"Clear the room!" a harsh, familiar female voice barked through the swirling chemical fog.
My heart stopped as Eleanor stepped through the smoke, dressed in full black tactical gear, her blond hair pulled tightly back.
A deep, purple bruise still marred her throat where I had choked her during our previous confrontation, but her eyes were wild with victory.
"Hello, little sister," Eleanor purred, leveling a silenced MPX directly at Clara's face. "Did you miss me?"
Clara lay beneath the mahogany table, holding our daughter beneath her body, her eyes burning with an unyielding, primal fury.
"You're a monster, Eleanor," Clara spat, refusing to cower before the weapon aimed at her forehead.
"I'm a survivor, Clara," Eleanor laughed, her finger slowly tightening on the trigger. "And survivors write the history books."

Suddenly, a heavy combat knife burst through Eleanor’s right shoulder from behind, the serrated steel gleaming brightly in the red emergency light.
