Chapter 20 - The Bloodline Legacy

The federal command tent was lit by flickering fluorescent lanterns as the coastal storm slowly began to break outside.

Special Agent Miller pulled up Maya’s certified hospital birth records on a secure government laptop, his fingers flying across the keys.

Marcus and I stood behind him, our breath catching in our throats as the high-resolution documents loaded on the screen.

"Boston St. Jude Memorial," Agent Miller read aloud, scrolling down through the standard obstetrics logs.

Everything looked completely normal—the delivery timestamp, my admission data, the attending physician's signatures.

"Scroll down to the infant genomic sequencing panel," Marcus instructed, his jaw clenched tight as iron.

Miller reached the final page of the document, and a sudden string of red, classified warning banners flashed across the interface.

"That's classified under federal biological quarantine laws," Miller muttered, adjusting his glasses in total shock. "How is this possible?"

The screen bypassed the security clearance, forced open by an automated backdoor embedded in the Geneva ledger Marcus had provided.

At the bottom of Maya’s newborn screening panel sat an official stamped seal bearing a crest that didn't belong to any American hospital.

It was a double-headed serpent entwined around a golden sword—the insignia of the Sterling-Vance ancestral trust.

Beneath the crest was a single line of printed text that made the room spin around me in violent, sickening circles:

*Biological Origin: Subject Clara Vance is confirmed as the sole surviving descendant of the Sterling Dynasty.*

*Infant Maya Vance represents the final primary vessel of the direct lineage.*

I stumbled backward, catching myself against the wooden frame of the command table as the ground vanished beneath my feet.

"Clara..." Marcus whispered, turning toward me with eyes wide with incomprehensible shock.

"That's impossible," I breathed, my hands shaking so violently I couldn't keep them steady. "My parents were teachers from Ohio."

"Your parents were adopted, Clara," Marcus said, the horrifying pieces of a lifelong puzzle snapping together in his mind.

"Isabella wasn't my mother's chosen daughter-in-law because of her family's wealth," Marcus realized, horror dripping from his words.

"She was chosen because Eleanor knew the true Sterling heiress had disappeared thirty years ago."

"They didn't just want to control Marcus," I gasped, looking out the tent flap toward the ambulance where our baby slept.

"They orchestrated our entire meeting in New York," Marcus said, tears of absolute rage stinging his eyes.

"Eleanor didn't hate you because you were an outsider, Clara. She hated you because you were the rightful owner of everything they stole."

Suddenly, the power grid inside the command tent flickered violently, dying out completely with a high-pitched electronic whine.

Outside, the steady idle of the police cruisers died simultaneously, plunges of darkness swallowing the entire perimeter.

Every vehicle, every computer, every emergency spotlight shut down in the exact same fraction of a second.

"What is happening?" Agent Miller yelled, reaching for his tactical flashlight, but the electronic switch refused to ignite.

A massive electromagnetic blackout had just hit the entire Blackwood Bay peninsula.

Then, through the sudden, unnatural silence of the forest, the low, heavy thrum of twin-rotor military helicopters echoed from the sea.

A blinding, multi-million-candlepower spotlight descended from the black sky, pinning our command tent in an unbearable white glare.

A voice boomed through an external loudspeaker mounted to the descending gunship, rattling the pine trees to their roots:

"Clara Vance, step out of the tent with the child, or the perimeter will be eliminated in thirty seconds."

May you like

Marcus drew his weapon, stepping directly in front of me with his face illuminated by the blinding spotlight from above.

"They aren't here for the money, Clara," Marcus whispered, cocking the hammer of his gun as the shadows closed in. "They are here for you."
