Chapter 23 - The Vault of Living Ghosts

The sound of Thomas's voice echoing from the walls sent a shiver down my spine that turned my blood to ice.

"He's inside the grid," Miller muttered under his breath, raising his weapon as he scanned the ceiling for sensors.

"He doesn't just have access, Miller," Marcus replied grimly. "He built this entire complex forty years ago."

Marcus took my hand in a grip so tight it bruised, guiding me down the sloping floor of the bunker.

Water pooled around our boots, black and stagnant, reflecting the eerie crimson glow of Miller’s tactical flashlight.

"Why is he doing this?" I whispered, my voice bouncing softly off the curved concrete walls. "What do they want from me?"

"You don't understand who your mother really was, Clara," Marcus said, his eyes scanning every pipe and shadow ahead.

"She was a schoolteacher from Maryland," I answered, my voice cracking with defensive anger. "She lived an ordinary life."

"Her name wasn't Sarah Vance," Marcus said, stopping in front of a heavy vault door marked with a weathered crest.

The crest stamped into the steel was an eagle clutching a broken anchor—the historic Sterling family sigil.

Marcus reached out, his fingers tracing the rusted contours of the embossed seal.

"Her real name was Victoria Sterling," Marcus said softly, turning to look into my eyes.

The world seemed to spin beneath my feet, the air rushing out of my lungs in a sharp gasp.

"Victoria was Eleanor’s older sister," Marcus revealed, his words falling like lead weights into the dark silence. "The original heir to the entire global estate."

"No," I whispered, shaking my head violently. "That’s impossible. My mother lived in a tiny suburban home!"

"Because she ran for her life the night you were born," Miller interjected, shining his flashlight on the vault's digital keypad.

The keypad, surprisingly, was glowing with a faint green auxiliary power light, completely unaffected by the EMP outside.

"Thomas and Eleanor didn't just steal the family empire," Marcus said, stepping up to the console. "They hunted Victoria across three continents."

Suddenly, the hydraulic locks on the vault door groaned loudly, disengaging on their own without Marcus entering a single code.

The massive door swung inward with a slow, agonizing shriek of rusted steel hinges.

Inside, battery-powered emergency strips flickered to life, illuminating a room filled with towering banks of server racks.

In the center of the room, seated behind a reinforced steel conference table, sat someone we never expected to see.

"You took long enough to get down here, little sister," a venomous voice drawled from the shadows of the vault.

Isabella sat in an executive leather chair, her ankles cuffed to the table leg, but an arrogant smile plastered on her face.

Her clothes were filthy, stained with dried blood and mud, but her eyes glittered with pure, calculated malice.

"Isabella?" I gasped, stepping back instinctively while shielding Noah behind my coat.

"Did you really think the FBI had me locked up in a federal holding cell, Clara?" Isabella laughed, rattling her chains lightly.

"Who put you here?" Marcus demanded, pointing his rifle directly at Isabella's forehead.

"The man who pays the bills, darling," Isabella mocked, leaning forward until her face caught the fluorescent light.

Behind Isabella, a massive flatscreen monitor flickered on, displaying a live feed of the hospital nursery across town.

On the screen, a red digital crosshair hovered over an empty incubator labeled with our daughter’s legal birth name.

"You think you won by saving that baby tonight?" Isabella sneered, her voice dripping with poison.

May you like

"They never wanted the child to die, Clara," Isabella whispered, her smile widening into a grotesque grin.

"They needed her alive to unlock the vault you're standing in right now."
