Chapter 14 - The Price of Breath

The nursery was dead quiet when Marcus kicked the door open, ripping the climate control unit directly out of the drywall.

He crushed the plastic filter beneath his heavy boot, revealing a miniature aerosol canister taped inside the ductwork.

"Julian always loved theatrical cruelty," Marcus said through gritted teeth, inspecting the chemical label on the canister.

Maya’s breathing was growing shallower in my arms, each fragile intake of air sounding like a dry rattle.

Every mother’s worst nightmare was happening to me in real time, and I felt completely powerless to stop it.

"Marcus, tell me the truth," I demanded, following him down the stairs as tears blurred the edges of the room. "What is in that ledger?"

Marcus reached the study, throwing open a concealed vault behind the mahogany bookshelves with frantic keystrokes.

He pulled out a heavy, titanium-cased hard drive bound by biometric fingerprint scanners.

"This drive doesn't just hold bank routing numbers," Marcus admitted, his voice raw with decades of suppressed shame.

"It contains the blackmail archives Eleanor and Julian gathered on every state governor, federal judge, and maritime commissioner on the eastern seaboard."

"If Julian gets this drive back, he doesn't just regain the Vance fortune," Marcus looked at me, his eyes bloodshot. "He becomes completely untouchable."

"I don't care about politicians or the Vance empire!" I screamed, holding our dying baby toward him. "She won't survive until midnight!"

Marcus checked Maya's pulse with two trembling fingers against her tiny neck.

Her pulse was racing, fluttery and dangerously erratic, like the wings of a trapped hummingbird.

"Julian lied about the timeline," Marcus realized, panic finally cracking through his cold exterior. "He said twenty minutes to force my hand early."

Suddenly, Marcus’s personal burner phone rang from the desk, lighting up with Arthur’s secure line.

Marcus hit speaker immediately, shouting before Arthur could even greet him.

"Arthur! Julian is alive! He poisoned Maya with a compound from the old family lab!"

The line was dead silent for three agonizing seconds before Arthur’s voice came through, completely flat and strange.

"I know, Marcus," Arthur replied calmly.

The air in the study instantly turned sub-zero.

"What did you just say?" Marcus whispered, freezing in place over the open safe.

"Eleanor was getting sloppy, letting herself get captured by a couple of hidden cameras," Arthur explained without a trace of remorse.

"She built an empire, but she became soft in her old age, obsessing over petty rivalries with Clara."

I stared at the glowing phone on the desk, unable to comprehend the betrayal unfolding before our ears.

Arthur was the one who helped us expose Isabella; he was the one who provided the legal documentation to put Eleanor in chains.

"You were working with Julian from the beginning," Marcus snarled, his voice vibrating with absolute murderous rage.

"Julian is ambitious, clean, and legally dead," Arthur said smoothly through the speaker. "The perfect corporate phantom."

"With Eleanor behind bars and you out of the picture, Julian and I split the offshore holdings fifty-fifty."

"Where is the antidote, Arthur?" I shrieked at the phone, stepping forward despite my shaking knees. "She is an innocent child!"

"The antidote is in the trunk of a rental sedan parked two miles south of the lighthouse," Arthur replied coldly.

"Bring the decryption key and the titanium drive to Julian at the docks, Marcus."

"If you call federal authorities, or if your wife attempts to contact emergency medical teams, the signal will be jammed."

"And Arthur?" Marcus said, his voice dropping into a deadly, gravelly register that promised unspeakable violence.

"Yes, Marcus?"

"When I am done saving my daughter, I am going to rip your world apart piece by piece."

May you like

"You have forty minutes, little brother," Arthur said, and terminated the connection with a mocking click.
