Chapter 17 - The Shattered Signal

The world plunged into instant, pitch-black chaos as the high-yield EMP grenade destroyed every electronic circuit within fifty yards.
The powerful sweeping beam of the lighthouse blew out in a violent shower of white-hot sparks and shattering glass.
Even the heavy rain seemed to pause for a microsecond under the concussive force of the sudden localized blast.
Gunfire immediately ripped through the darkness, muzzle flashes illuminating the furious, distorted faces of Julian and Arthur.
"Kill him!" Julian screamed, his voice wild and frantic as his silver revolver boomed across the concrete terrace.
I didn't wait to think; my instincts took complete control of my trembling body.
I squeezed the trigger of my weapon, aiming at the muzzle flash erupting from Arthur’s automatic rifle.
The kickback of the gun jolted through my wrists, the sharp crack of my shot cutting through the whistling gale.
A sharp cry of agony echoed from the lighthouse doorway as Arthur staggered backward, clutching his shattered right shoulder.
"Clara!" Marcus’s voice cut through the darkness from the left side of the platform. "Get down!"
Arthur dropped his heavy rifle onto the stones, swearing viciously as he scrambled into the pitch-black interior of the tower.
Julian spun toward my position, firing two blind rounds that shredded the rusted metal fence right beside my head.
Before Julian could realign his sights on me, Marcus tackled him from the side with the full force of his body.
The two brothers slammed heavily against the low concrete seawall overlooking the violent ocean eighty feet below.
The silver revolver flew from Julian’s fingers, clattering over the edge into the churning black abyss.
I sprinted through the shattered gate, the wet stones slick beneath my sneakers, my weapon raised and ready to fire.
Through the darkness, I could see them locked in a brutal, life-or-death struggle on the edge of the precipice.
Julian was taller and driven by a manic, unhinged fury, clawing brutally at Marcus's injured cheek and throat.
"You ruined everything!" Julian snarled, his fingers digging into Marcus's wound. "I spent six years building this network!"
Marcus drove his knee upward into Julian’s ribs with a sickening crunch that echoed over the wind.
Julian gasped, doubling over, but used his momentum to pull Marcus toward the crumbling edge of the cliff.
"If I'm going down, little brother, the Vance legacy dies with both of us!" Julian shrieked, his eyes wide with madness.
"The legacy died the day you tried to poison my child," Marcus growled, breaking Julian’s grip with a brutal twist of his arm.
Marcus drove a heavy right cross straight into Julian's jaw, knocking the older brother onto the slick parapet.
Julian slipped on the wet moss, his arms flailing desperately as he lost his balance over the churning drop.
For a split second, Marcus reached out, his hand instinctively catching Julian’s soaking wet cashmere sleeve.
Julian hung suspended over the crashing waves, the sheer drop waiting to smash his body against the black granite boulders.
"Marcus... please," Julian begged, his arrogance completely dissolving into pathetic, wide-eyed terror. "We're brothers."
"Brothers don't try to murder newborn babies," Marcus said, his voice cold, steady, and utterly unforgiving.
Behind us, the heavy iron door of the lighthouse suddenly creaked open, and a bleeding figure emerged into the rain.
It was Arthur, holding a spare pistol with his left hand, aiming directly at Marcus’s exposed back.

"Marcus, look out!" I screamed, raising my weapon with no time left to hesitate.
