Chapter 1 - The Red Heel on the Marble Floor

The polished hospital floor felt like a sheet of pure ice against my bare arms.

I curled my body into a tight, desperate knot, pressing my palms over my seven-month swollen belly.

Above me stood Isabella, her posture straight, her silk blouse pristine, and her eyes venomous.

Her sharp, crimson high heel dug painfully into the curve of my side, pinning me against the floor.

"You really thought you could trap him with a child, didn't you, Khloe?" she whispered.

I gasped for air, tears blurring the harsh fluorescent lights glowing above her head.

"Please, Isabella," I choked out, feeling my baby kick wildly inside me. "Not the baby. Please."

She only smiled, pressing the heel down with deliberate, sadistic pressure.

The heavy mahogany door swung open with a violent crash.

"KHLOE!"

Marcus’s voice tore through the room like an explosive shockwave.

Isabella’s face went dead white in a split second.

She ripped her foot away from my side, stumbling backward toward the vanity mirror.

Marcus dropped his leather briefcase, the latch snapping open as papers spilled across the floor.

He rushed toward us, his boots skidding across the polished marble.

My lungs burned as I tried to pull in enough oxygen to speak.

Isabella recovered with terrifying speed, dropping to her knees beside me and forcing tears into her eyes.

"SHE FELL—I WAS JUST TRYING TO HELP HER!" she sobbed, throwing her hands toward the ceiling.

Marcus skidded to a halt, his chest heaving under his tailored wool coat.

He looked down at me, trembling and bruised on the cold floor.

Then his gaze drifted slowly down to Isabella’s shoes.

A faint scuff of my skin and a smudge of hospital lotion stained the pointed red toe of her heel.

Marcus’s jaw hardened until a muscle jumped visibly beneath his skin.

He raised his eyes and looked straight into her trembling face.

Isabella reached out, trying to grab his hand with trembling fingers.

"Marcus, just listen to me—she became dizzy and collapsed against the bedside stand—"

SLAP!

The sound echoed through the high-ceilinged private suite like a gunshot.

Marcus struck her across the cheek with the full force of his furious arm.

"DON’T YOU DARE LIE TO ME!" he roared.

Isabella stumbled hard against the bedside table, knocking over a vase of fresh lilies.

Water and white petals splashed across her designer skirt as she fell to her knees, stunned into silence.

Her hand hovered over her reddening cheek, her chest shuddering in genuine shock.

For a long, suffocating moment, nobody in the room moved.

The only sound was the rapid, uneven hitch of my breath and the distant hum of medical monitors.

Then something changed in Isabella's expression.

The fake tears vanished instantly from her eyes, replaced by an icy, paralyzing dread.

Her chin tilted upward, her gaze locking onto the far corner of the high hospital ceiling.

Every trace of color drained from her skin until she looked like a walking corpse.

Tucked discreetly inside the smoke detector fixture, a tiny red light was blinking rhythmically.

A high-definition security camera had been recording every single breath in the room.

Marcus hadn't noticed the lens yet, his eyes still locked in disgust on the woman he once trusted.

He fell to his knees beside me, his hands shaking violently as he touched my face.

"Khloe, talk to me," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking with sheer panic. "Where are you hurt?"

"My side," I breathed, clinging to the lapel of his coat. "The baby... Marcus, get the doctor."

He pressed the red emergency button on the wall unit, sending a frantic alarm down the hallway.

Yet across the room, Isabella remained frozen, her wide eyes still locked onto that tiny red light.

She didn't care about the slap.

She didn't care about Marcus screaming at her.

Judging by the absolute terror stretching across her features, that camera had captured something far worse than her foot on my ribs.

May you like

It had recorded what she whispered into my ear before Marcus ever opened the door.

And that secret was about to burn her entire life to ashes.
