Chapter 5 - Blood Never Lies

Forty-eight hours later, the exclusive Drake Hotel ballroom was packed for the annual Midwestern Heritage Charity Auction.

The elite had gathered to bid millions on rare art, vintage diamonds, and historical artifacts. But tonight, nobody cared about the art. Rumors had ripped through Chicago like wildfire: Anna Moretti was alive, operating under an international alias, and standing at the side of Julian Sterling.

When Vincent arrived, the whispering stopped.

He was impeccably dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, but the dark circles beneath his eyes and the hollow sharpness of his cheekbones revealed a man running on pure fury and sleepless nights.

Across the room, seated at the prime front table, was Anna.

Tonight, she wore a midnight-blue gown cut high at the neck, concealing her scars, with her hair cascading in glossy waves over her shoulders. She was laughing softly at something Julian Sterling whispered into her ear. She looked radiant, powerful, untouched by the past.

Beside Vincent, a runner slipped through the crowd and handed Marco a sealed manila envelope stamped with red wax.

Marco immediately handed it to Vincent. "From Dr. Reyes. Direct hand-delivery."

Vincent’s fingers tore into the paper with savage urgency. His heart hammered violently against his sternum. He pulled out the single sheet of forensic letterhead, skipping past the complex allele charts and statistical probabilities, straight to the conclusion at the bottom of the page:

**Probability of Paternity: 99.998%**

**Subject: Leo Sterling / Biological Father: Vincent Moretti**

Vincent’s breath hitched. A heavy, burning tear escaped his eye and rolled down his cheek.

*He is mine.*

*My son. My flesh. My blood.*

Anna hadn't miscarried. In the midst of the smoke, the burning fuselage, and the catastrophic collapse of the jet, she had protected their baby with her own flesh. She had survived the third-degree burns, the agonizing surgeries, the lonely months of recovery in European clinics, all while Vincent was mourning over an empty box and taking Sophia to private dinners.

The shame that washed over Vincent was so suffocating it nearly brought him to his knees.

On the auction stage, the auctioneer cleared his throat into the microphone. "Ladies and gentlemen, we now move to lot number fourteen. A magnificent piece of history: The Romanov Star. An eighteen-carat sapphire brooch surrounded by rare pink diamonds, originally gifted to the Grand Duchess."

The bidding started at two million dollars.

"Three million," a voice called out from the back.

It was Sophia Carter.

She sat three tables away from Vincent, trying desperately to reassert her status after being unceremoniously evicted from his penthouse. She wanted everyone to see that she still had wealth, still had power, still held her ground.

"Three million five hundred thousand," Julian Sterling called out lazily, raising his paddle without even looking up from his champagne.

Sophia’s face tightened. "Four million."

"Five million," Julian countered instantly.

Sophia gritted her teeth, raising her paddle again. "Six million!"

The room murmured. Six million was double the market value of the brooch. Sophia was bleeding capital just to prove a point.

Then, Anna slowly raised her hand.

She didn't use a paddle. She simply looked across the ballroom directly at Sophia, her eyes filled with cold amusement.

"Ten million dollars," Anna announced.

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom. Ten million dollars in liquid cash for a decorative brooch.

Sophia’s face flushed bright red. She looked frantically around the room, hoping Vincent would raise his paddle to back her bid, to protect her pride like he used to.

Vincent didn't move. He stood by the entrance, staring at Anna with reverent awe.

"Ten million going once," the auctioneer declared, his voice shaking with excitement. "Ten million going twice... Sold to Countess Helena Vance Sterling!"

Applause erupted across the room.

Anna stood up gracefully, accepting the polite nods from the surrounding ambassadors and executives. Then, with the entire room watching, she took the microphone handed to her by the stage assistant.

"Thank you, everyone," Anna’s voice rang clear and melodic through the speakers. "I bought this piece tonight because it reminded me of an important truth. Diamonds are formed under unimaginable heat and pressure. When you throw someone into the fire expecting them to turn to ash... sometimes, they return unbreakable."

Her eyes locked straight onto Sophia, who was trembling with humiliation.

"And to those who thrive by stealing from others: enjoy the crumbs while you can. Because the fire is coming for you next."

Anna handed the microphone back, turned on her heel, and walked out through the VIP terrace doors into the cool night air.

Vincent didn't hesitate. He thrust the paternity test into his inner pocket and charged after her.
