Chapter 14 - Blood on the Altar of Greed

The rain over the Calumet River tasted of rust and industrial sulfur. Inside Warehouse 42, the only illumination came from a single halogen lamp swinging from an exposed steel truss, casting jagged shadows across the corrugated iron walls.
Tied to a rusted iron chair in the center of the concrete floor was Nikolai Petrov, a mid-level enforcer on the Vance syndicate payroll. His face was already swollen, blood dripping from his split lip onto his soiled collar. Standing over him, Marcus looked impassive, his arms crossed over a bulletproof vest.
The heavy sliding door of the warehouse screeched open. Vincent Moretti walked in.
He had removed his suit jacket, rolling the sleeves of his crisp white dress shirt up to his elbows. The faint silver cufflink glinted under the swinging halogen bulb. He walked without hurry, the rhythmic crunch of his boots on gravel and broken glass sounding like the ticking of an executioner's clock.
Nikolai spat blood onto the floor, trying to sneer. "Moretti. The soft-hearted prince. Come to beg for terms?"
Vincent didn't answer. He walked up to the iron chair, picked up a steel crowbar resting against an empty fuel drum, and swung it with bone-shattering force into Nikolai’s right kneecap.
A wet, sickening crunch echoed through the cavernous space, followed immediately by a scream so shrill and agonized it rattled the metal rafters. Nikolai’s body convulsed against the heavy hemp ropes, his eyes bulging in sheer, unfiltered shock.
Vincent rested the bloody tip of the crowbar on the concrete floor, leaning on it casually, his eyes dead and empty.
"You poisoned a three-year-old child," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm, barely louder than a whisper. "You used synthetic organophosphates manufactured in Zurich. That tells me Julian brought his European supply chain with him."
"F-fuck you..." Nikolai gasped, hyperventilating through the blinding pain. "Julian... Julian will skin you alive. You don't know who he’s backed by... you think it’s just the Vances? It’s bigger than Chicago, you arrogant bastard!"
Vincent tilted his head. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't show anger. That was the most terrifying thing about Vincent Moretti when pushed beyond the brink: his rage was not fire. It was absolute zero.
"I have thirty-two minutes before my wife expects an update on my whereabouts," Vincent said, checking his platinum wristwatch. "It takes four minutes to shatter the other knee. It takes six minutes to systematically break every bone in both of your hands. That leaves twenty-two minutes for the blowtorch Marcus is holding over there."
Nikolai glanced at Marcus, who ignited a propane torch with a sharp click. The blue flame roared into life, casting flickering shadows against the darkness. Nikolai’s swagger dissolved into pure animal terror.
"Wait! Wait! Don't! I was just the middleman!" Nikolai shrieked, thrashing against the ropes. "Julian is at the Drake Hotel! Penthouse suite under the name 'Von Berg'! He didn't want the kid dead—he just wanted you distracted!"
Vincent’s eyes narrowed. "Distracted from what?"
"The transfer!" Nikolai sobbed, tears cutting lines through the soot and dried blood on his face. "The Sterling blind trust! Julian found the original Aspen flight data recorder! The black box... it was never fully destroyed! There's an unredacted audio recording from the cockpit. He’s going to use it at the Symphony Charity Gala tomorrow night. He’s going to broadcast it to the entire high society, to the federal prosecutors, to every network in the country!"
Vincent felt a cold pit open in his stomach. "What audio?"
"The pilot!" Nikolai cried, his voice breaking. "The pilot’s conversation with the ground control tower before the crash! It wasn't an engine failure, and it wasn't just Elena’s tampering! The audio proves... it proves your own board authorized the route divert into the blizzard! Julian has the signature, Moretti! He has the digital authorization stamped from your private executive IP address!"
Vincent stood frozen. His mind raced back three years to that catastrophic night in Aspen. The blizzard. The warning lights. Elena begging him to save her. Anna trapped beneath the crushed fuselage...
If an authorization had been sent from his private IP to force that jet into the storm, someone inside his inner circle had orchestrated the crash not just to eliminate Anna, but to frame Vincent for corporate manslaughter and clear the way for a total takeover.
"Who authorized it?" Vincent demanded, grabbing Nikolai by the throat, his fingers digging into the enforcer's jugular. "Whose name was on the digital key?"
Nikolai choked, struggling for breath, his eyes rolling back. "D-Damian... Damian Sterling... your father-in-law's estranged brother! He’s been working with Julian from Zurich the whole time!"
Vincent stepped back, releasing the man’s throat. Nikolai slumped forward, coughing violently.
Damian Sterling. Anna’s disgraced uncle, banished from the family fortune ten years ago after an embezzlement scandal. The puzzle pieces snapped together with horrifying clarity. Elena Vance had been nothing more than an ambitious, psychopathic pawn. The real architect of the Aspen inferno was still free, using Julian Vance as his attack dog to finish what the fire had started: the total annihilation of the Sterling bloodline.
Vincent turned his back on the weeping enforcer.
"Marcus," Vincent said quietly.
"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"Clean this up. Put him in a secure safehouse where Julian’s men won't find the body. Then assemble my tactical team." Vincent pulled off his bloodstained gloves and tossed them into a burning metal drum. "Tomorrow night, we go to the Drake."
