Chapter 18 - Fractured Vows

The five hundred guests in the Symphony Hall turned their eyes toward the towering screens as the feedback subsided into a horrifyingly familiar sound: the screaming roar of jet turbines battling a blizzard.

*"This is executive ground control, Captain. Disregard secondary landing vector. Proceed through the pass. Override authorization code: Sterling-Six-Six-Bravo."*

The crystal-clear, digitized voice of Damian Sterling echoed through every speaker in the grand ballroom, bouncing off the gold-leaf ceilings with the weight of an executioner's gavel.

Every face in the room turned toward Damian. The silver-haired patriarch went completely white, stumbling back against a marble pillar, his chest heaving as if he were having a coronary.

Then came the second voice—Elena Vance:

*"Make sure her side goes down first. If the girl survives the impact, Damian won't pay the second tranche. Vincent will pull me out—he thinks I'm carrying his child. Let the wife burn."*

The silence in the grand ballroom was absolute. It was the silence of a mass grave.

Socialites clutched their pearls in horror; corporate titans stared in slack-jawed shock; three prominent federal judges standing near the bar exchanged grim, fatal glances. The entire high society of North America was listening to the premeditated murder of Anna Sterling—planned by her own uncle, executed by Julian’s sister, using Vincent’s misplaced honor as the trigger.

Julian Vance lunged forward, his face twisted in psychotic rage. "Shut it off! Turn that fucking feed off right now!"

He reached into the breast pocket of his tuxedo, but before his fingers could close around the concealed ceramic pistol, Vincent moved.

With the speed of a striking cobra, Vincent’s hand clamped onto Julian’s throat, slamming the younger Vance backward over a banquet table. Champagne flutes, crystal bowls, and silver ice buckets crashed to the floor in a catastrophic spray of glass and alcohol.

Vincent pinned Julian to the shattered table with one arm, his fingers digging into Julian’s windpipe until the blonde man’s face turned purple, his feet kicking frantically against the air.

"Vincent! No!"

Anna’s sharp command sliced through the chaos.

Vincent paused. His knuckles were white, his dark eyes ablaze with the monstrous urge to crush Julian’s larynx right there beneath the crystal chandeliers. He looked up at Anna.

She stood amidst the broken glass, emerald silk shimmering, her chin held high. There was no panic in her eyes—only the cold, majestic authority of a sovereign queen.

"Do not stain your hands on garbage, Vincent," Anna said, her voice ringing clear across the stunned ballroom. "Death is too merciful for what they are owed."

Vincent held Julian for one more agonizing second, letting the terrified man stare into the abyss of his eyes, before releasing his throat. Julian fell to the floor, gasping and retching amidst the spilled champagne and broken glass.

At that exact moment, the double mahogany doors of the Symphony Center burst open.

A dozen federal tactical agents in full combat gear swarmed into the ballroom, led by Agent Hayes and the Chicago Chief of Police. Red laser sights danced across the walls, converging instantly on Damian Sterling and Julian Vance.

"Damian Sterling! Julian Vance! Federal warrants for attempted murder, high treason, and corporate espionage! Hands on your heads! Move and you will be terminated!"

Damian fell to his knees without a fight, weeping into his trembling hands as zip-ties were yanked around his wrists. Julian, bleeding from the mouth, was dragged off the floor, his venomous eyes locked onto Anna until the federal agents forced his head down and hauled him out through the side exits.

The ballroom was in utter shambles. The music was gone. The champagne was spilled. The illusion of high-society elegance lay shattered in the dust.

Anna turned to Vincent.

He was standing in the middle of the debris, his tuxedo spattered with champagne, his chest heaving, his eyes searching hers for judgment, for condemnation, for anything.

"You knew," Anna whispered, her voice trembling slightly beneath the emerald dress. "You knew she was never pregnant."

"I found out this afternoon," Vincent said, his voice breaking, stepping toward her across the glass. "I swear to you, Anna... three years ago, I thought... I thought I was choosing an unborn life. I didn't know I was choosing a lie."

Anna closed her eyes. Two solitary tears escaped her lashes, tracing hot tracks down her porcelain cheeks. "The lie destroyed us, Vincent."

"Then let me build something real," Vincent begged, his hand reaching out, his fingers trembling as they stopped a fraction of an inch from her cheek. "Let me rebuild what I burned."

Before Anna could answer, the lights in the entire Symphony Center violently cut out.
