Chapter 19 - The Trap Snaps Shut

Emergency red lights instantly bathed the grand ballroom in a bloody, apocalyptic glow. The auxiliary alarms wailed—a high-pitched, strobing screech that sent the remaining guests screaming toward the emergency fire exits.
"Anna!" Vincent roared in the darkness.
He grabbed her arm, pulling her violently behind the shelter of a thick marble pillar just as the sound of suppressed submachine-gun fire ripped through the hall.
*Thwip-thwip-thwip!*
The marble above their heads exploded in a shower of pulverized stone and plaster. Across the ballroom, two federal agents went down, clutching their chests. A rogue mercenary squad in unmarked black tactical gear had breached the rear mezzanine, providing lethal covering fire.
"Julian had a backup extraction team," Vincent growled, his mind instantly shifting into combat survival. He pulled a compact Glock 19 from the holster concealed beneath his tailored tuxedo coat. "Stay behind me!"
"I don't need your protection, Vincent!" Anna snapped, reaching down and ripping the long train of her emerald gown to free her legs, grabbing a heavy silver candelabra from a nearby cart. "Where is Leo?"
The question hit Vincent like a physical blow.
He pulled out his phone. The screen was black. A localized electromagnetic jammer had taken down all cellular communications within a three-block radius of the Symphony Hall.
"Marcus is at the estate with a full squad," Vincent yelled over the staccato rhythm of gunfire. "The perimeter is locked down with military-grade defenses. Leo is safe, Anna! But they’re trying to cut us off here!"
"Look!" Anna pointed toward the VIP mezzanine.
Through the red emergency strobe, they saw Julian Vance, freed from his zip-ties by two masked mercenaries, dragging a wounded federal agent toward the service elevators. Julian looked down at Vincent and Anna, grinning like a manic demon, his face smeared with blood. He held up a black military detonator.
"You took everything from me, Moretti!" Julian’s amplified voice crackled over the emergency tannoy. "Now see how much your empire is worth in ashes!"
Julian pressed the switch.
A deafening explosion rocked the lower levels of the Symphony Center. The marble floor buckled violently, cracks racing across the polished stone like spiderwebs. Dust, fire, and suffocating black smoke billowed up from the utility shafts. The entire eastern wing of the historic building began to groan under catastrophic structural failure.
"The exits are collapsing!" Anna shouted, coughing through the thick smoke as burning debris rained down around them.
Vincent gripped her hand—not with the tentative hesitation of a disgraced husband, but with the unyielding iron grip of a man willing to drag her out of hell itself.
"Trust me," Vincent pleaded, his dark eyes burning into hers through the smoke and ash. "One last time, Anna. Trust me to get you home."
Anna looked at his bloody hands, looked at the ceiling buckling above them, and tightened her grip on his fingers. "Get us out, Vincent."
They sprinted through the smoke, dodging falling chandeliers and collapsing plaster. Vincent fired four precise shots through the haze, taking down a mercenary attempting to cut off the kitchen service corridor. Kicking open the heavy steel fire door, Vincent hauled Anna into the subterranean alleyway behind the theater just as a massive section of the grand ballroom ceiling crashed down into the inferno behind them.
They tumbled out into the cold Chicago rain, gasping for air, their clothes soaked in water and ash.
Waiting at the end of the alley was Vincent’s reinforced Maybach, tires idling, Marcus behind the wheel with a bloody bandage wrapped around his forehead.
"Boss! Get in! Now!" Marcus screamed through the open window.
Vincent shoved Anna into the reinforced passenger cabin, diving in right behind her as Marcus slammed the gas. The Maybach launched forward, tires screaming against the wet asphalt, leaving the burning ruin of the Symphony Center behind.
Anna collapsed against the leather seat, her chest heaving, clutching the torn emerald silk to her body. Vincent leaned back, blood dripping from a cut above his brow, his breathing ragged.
"Marcus," Vincent panted, wiping the blood from his eyes. "Status on the estate."
Marcus didn't answer immediately. He looked at Vincent through the rearview mirror, his face as pale as a corpse.
"Marcus!" Anna screamed, terror flaring in her chest. "Where is my son?!"
Marcus’s voice shook—something Vincent had never heard in ten years of service.
"Boss... Madam Sterling... the attack on the Symphony wasn't an extraction."
Marcus reached to the dashboard and clicked on a high-resolution surveillance tablet, sliding it back to them.

"It was a diversion. The estate... they bypassed the gates twenty minutes ago."
