Chapter 24 - The Match and the Gasoline

The tension in the hangar condensed until it felt as though a single spark would combust the very air they breathed.
"Anna!" Vincent roared from the floor, his calm shattering into panic. "Get out of here! Marcus, take her out!"
"Marcus is securing the perimeter exits, Vincent," Anna said, not looking at him, keeping her sights locked dead onto Elena. "I am not leaving my son. Not again."
Elena laughed—a high, manic, screeching sound that bounced off the steel rafters. "Look at the happy little family! The prodigal wife, the kneeling king, and the little bastard heir!"
Elena ripped a five-gallon plastic jerrycan of high-octane aviation fuel off the fuselage wing and kicked it violently. The yellow container split, dumping twenty liters of raw kerosene directly over Vincent’s shoulders.
The pungent, suffocating liquid soaked through Vincent’s hair, his shirt, his wounds, burning his torn flesh like liquid fire.
Leo screamed in terror, thrashing against his bonds. "MAMA! PAPA!"
"Shut up!" Julian yelled, firing a warning shot into the concrete an inch from Leo’s sneakers. The ricochet pinged off the steel fuselage, sending sparks flying.
"Julian, stop!" Anna screamed, taking two aggressive steps forward, raising the flare gun higher. "You want the Vance empire? Here it is!" She held up the black titanium drive. "The master encryption keys. Vincent’s biometric overrides are bypassed by this hardware key. Take it and let them go!"
Julian tilted his head, his eyes glinting with avarice. For all his grand monologues about vengeance, the sheer scale of the Vance fortune was an irresistible siren call.
"Toss it," Julian ordered, his revolver still hovering near Leo.
Anna slowly bent her knees, sliding the titanium drive across the slick, oil-stained concrete. It skittered thirty feet, stopping directly at Julian’s feet.
Julian glanced down, his boot pressing on the edge of the drive. A triumphant, vicious smirk spread across his lips. "Fascinating how quickly pride dissolves when the noose tightens."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box of long wooden matches. He struck one against the abrasive strip.
A bright, dancing yellow flame sprang to life in the dim cavern.
Vincent remained on his knees, drenched in kerosene, smelling the vapor rising around his own throat. He knew the physics of it. If that match touched the pool beneath him, he would become an incandescent pillar of fire within two seconds. There would be no Aspen miracle this time. There would only be ash.
"Julian," Vincent whispered, his voice steadying once more. "Look at Anna. She gave you the keys. The deal is done."
"The deal is done when the debt is paid," Julian hissed. He turned to Anna, holding out the burning match. "Here's the final curtain, Anna. Take the match from my hand. Drop it on your husband. You do that, and I personally walk Leo to your Maybach. Or... I drop it on the fuel line leading to the boy’s chair."
"You monster," Anna whispered, her hand trembling violently on the flare gun.

"Tick-tock, Anna," Julian whispered, the match burning down toward his fingertips. "Who burns tonight? The boy... or the husband who left you to die?"
