Chapter 8 - The Price of Disloyalty

The silence in the room was heavier than the gunfire on the docks.
Gabriel closed his eyes for a long moment, a single tear cutting through the dried blood and grime on his cheek. For a man who had built an empire on violence, control, and absolute loyalty, the realization that he had been completely, utterly played was a wound far deeper than the bullet in his back.
"Claire," he rasped, his voice breaking.
Claire stood by the window, watching the moonlight cut through the blinds. She looked down at the scattered pearls resting against the floorboards.
"You gave her my wedding gift, Gabriel," she said softly.
"I didn't know," he choked out, turning his head toward her, his dark eyes pleading with a raw vulnerability she had never seen in him before. "God help me, Claire... I didn't know. I thought I was protecting the daughter of a man who died for my family. I thought... I thought I was doing the honorable thing."
"Honor?" Claire turned around, her eyes blazing with unshed tears. "You called me paranoid. You told me I was insecure! For three years, Gabriel, you treated my pain as if it were a defect in my character! Whenever she called, you ran. Whenever she cried, you comforted her. You took the one thing that was supposed to belong exclusively to me, and you handed it to a snake because you couldn't tell the difference between guilt and love!"
Gabriel tried to push himself up, a groan of pure agony tearing from his throat as the stitches strained. "Claire, please... don't do this. I was blind. I was a fool. I will crawl on my knees across Boston if you ask it of me. Just come back."
Claire walked slowly to the edge of the bed. She looked down at the man she had loved with every fiber of her being—a man who was bleeding, broken, and begging at her feet.
"You still don't understand, Gabriel," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "The bullet in your shoulder will heal. The ports will be cleared. The press will find another scandal. But the woman who trusted you without hesitation... she died in that cathedral at midnight."
"Claire—"
"Rest, Gabriel," she said, leaning down and kissing his feverish forehead one last time. "You survived the ambush. Now survive without me."

She turned and walked out of the room. Behind her, she heard the harsh, ragged sound of Gabriel Moretti weeping into the darkness.
