Chapter 2 - The Morning After the Fall

By six o'clock the following morning, Boston was awake, and the upper crust was feeding on the scandal like wolves in custom tailoring.

Every social feed, business journal, and gossip column was splashed with the same image: Claire Bennett walking out of the cathedral alone into the rainy night, her bare left hand prominently displayed against the dark fabric of her coat. The headlines were brutal:

**BENNETT-MORETTI MERGER CRUMBLES AT THE ALTAR**

**THE RUNAWAY HEIRESS: CLAIRE BENNETT CANCELS BILLION-DOLLAR MARITIME WEDDING**

**VANESSA RUSSO: THE THIRD PERSON IN THE MORETTI BRIDAL SUITE?**

Inside the penthouse overlooking the Boston Common, Claire sat at the mahogany kitchen island, sipping black coffee. She was impeccably dressed in an ivory cashmere turtleneck and charcoal trousers. Her dark hair was pulled back into a sleek, unforgiving chignon. Across from her, Julian Vance, Bennett Atlantic’s chief legal counsel, had spread three legal pads across the marble surface.

"The wedding vendors have been paid in full and released with non-disclosure agreements," Julian said, his reading glasses perched on the tip of his nose. "The Harbor Club has canceled the reception. The press statements are drafted. But Claire... the voting trust agreement for the shipping terminals is scheduled to execute automatically at noon today."

"Void it," Claire said calmly.

Julian paused, looking up. "Claire, if you void the maritime alliance, Moretti Logistics will take a forty percent hit on their winter freight capacity. Gabriel’s board will revolt. His private creditors in New York won't tolerate that kind of volatility. It’s an act of war."

"Gabriel declared war the moment he put my wedding pearls around another woman’s neck in front of his family," Claire replied, her voice dangerously steady. "He gambled that I was too proud, too polite, and too deeply invested in his touch to burn the bridge. He forgot that I built the bridge."

Her phone buzzed violently against the counter.

*Gabriel.*

It was the nineteenth call since dawn. She didn't touch it.

Across town, in the penthouse suite of the Moretti Tower, the atmosphere was entirely different.

A heavy crystal tumbler shattered against the floor-to-ceiling glass, sending Scotch cascading down the panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Nicholas Moretti leaned against the bar, rubbing his temples. "You shouldn't have brought Vanessa, Gabriel. I told you. Mom told you. You humiliated Claire in the one place she demanded respect."

Gabriel stood with his back to his brother, his broad shoulders tense beneath a black bespoke dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the dark, serpentine tattoos running down his forearms. His knuckles were raw, bruised from three hours spent in the gym before dawn trying to exorcise the image of Claire walking down the cathedral aisle away from him.

"Vanessa was threatened," Gabriel said, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. "Frank Russo owed money to the Castiglione family before he died. They sent men to her lobby. What was I supposed to do? Leave her to be butchered?"

"You could have put her in a safehouse with six guards!" Nicholas snapped. "You didn't have to put her in the front pew. And you goddamn well didn't have to give her the pearls you bought for Claire!"

Gabriel spun around, his eyes burning with an unholy intensity that made even his brother take half a step back. "The pearls were a comfort. Vanessa was shaking, hysterical. I grabbed the box from my desk because it was there. It meant nothing."

"It meant everything to Claire!" Nicholas shouted. "Look outside, Gabriel! The stock for our coastal operations dropped eight points at the opening bell. Bennett Atlantic’s board is meeting right now. She’s locking us out of the deep-water docks."

Gabriel’s jaw set into iron. He grabbed his coat from the leather sofa.

"Where are you going?" Nicholas demanded.

May you like

"To Bennett Atlantic," Gabriel said coldly, pulling on his black overcoat. "Claire wants to play corporate games. She wants to see if I’ll bleed. She forgets that before I wore this suit, I made my living in the mud. She’s going to talk to me. Today."
