Chapter 5 - A Velvet Trap

Two nights later, the Boston Symphony Hall hosted its annual Winter Gala.
Under normal circumstances, Claire Bennett and Gabriel Moretti would have entered hand-in-hand as the city's reigning power couple. Tonight, the grand foyer—gilded with gold leaf and illuminated by massive crystal chandeliers—buzzed with predatory anticipation.
Every socialite in high-society Boston was waiting to see who would show up, and with whom.
At eight o’clock, Gabriel Moretti arrived.
He wore a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, cutting an imposing, dark figure that made heads turn and conversations halt. But he was not alone.
On his arm, dressed in an ethereal pale pink silk gown that exposed her slender shoulders, was Vanessa Russo. Around Vanessa’s neck—glittering shamelessly under the chandelier light—hung the three strands of cream-white pearls.
The insult was deliberate. It was public. It was a declaration that Gabriel Moretti did not accept defeat; he simply replaced the player.
"Gabriel, look at them staring," Vanessa whispered, leaning closely into his shoulder, her hand resting delicately on his forearm. Her voice carried the faint tremble of manufactured vulnerability. "Maybe I shouldn't have come. They think I broke you two apart."
Gabriel’s eyes swept the room, cold and indifferent to the whispers. But his jaw was clenched tight. He had brought Vanessa for one reason only: his informants had told him Claire would be here tonight. He wanted Claire to see that his world did not stop spinning because she threw away his ring. He wanted to provoke her, to break through that impenetrable wall of aristocratic ice.
"Let them stare," Gabriel said, taking two champagne flutes from a passing waiter and handing one to her. "You are under my protection. No one in this room has the courage to whisper to my face."
"You're too good to me," Vanessa murmured, her eyes gleaming with triumphant malice as she stroked the pearls at her throat. "Claire never appreciated how rare a man you are."
Gabriel didn't answer. His gaze was fixed on the grand marble staircase.
Suddenly, the ambient hum of three hundred elite guests went dead silent.
At the top of the grand staircase stood Claire Bennett.
She did not look like a heartbroken woman. She looked like an empress preparing to conquer a continent.
She wore a backless gown of liquid emerald silk that draped over her curves like water and trailed behind her on the marble. Her dark hair fell in soft, Old Hollywood waves over one bare shoulder. Around her throat was not a set of modest pearls, but an antique Art Deco collar of raw emeralds and platinum—an heirloom from her great-grandmother that hadn't seen the light of day in forty years.
Beside her, holding her hand with easy, aristocratic familiarity, was Lucian Cross.
Lucian Cross was thirty-eight, European-educated, exceptionally handsome, and the sole heir to the Cross Atlantic Financial Group—the single largest maritime hedge fund in North America, and Gabriel Moretti’s primary commercial rival.
Gabriel’s glass snapped in his hand.
The crystal shattered, spilling vintage Dom Pérignon over his fingers, staining his cuff red with a mixture of alcohol and blood.
He didn't notice. His entire universe had narrowed down to the sight of Claire Bennett descending the stairs, laughing softly at something Lucian Cross had whispered into her ear.
"Gabriel!" Vanessa gasped, reaching for his bleeding hand with a silk handkerchief. "You’re bleeding!"
Gabriel shoved her hand away with a ferocity that made her stagger. "Get Elena," he commanded, his voice shaking with a terrifying, primal rage. "Get my mother and Nicholas. Now."
Across the ballroom, Claire met Gabriel’s eyes.

She did not smirk. She did not look away. She merely looked through him, as if he were nothing more than a crack in the plaster of the wall, before turning her brilliant smile back to Lucian Cross.
