Chapter 4 - The Whispers of Black Harbor

By nightfall, Claire was not resting. She was sitting in the private library of her family’s sprawling estate in Marblehead, overlooking the jagged, black waters of the North Shore.

Across from her sat Samuel Drake, an ex-naval intelligence operative who now ran the most discreet private intelligence firm in New England.

"You asked me to look into Vanessa Russo’s debts," Drake said, sliding an unmarked manila folder across the low glass table. "It took four hours of digging through offshore shells in Cyprus and shell LLCs registered in Delaware. What I found does not match the story Gabriel Moretti is being told."

Claire leaned forward, her fingers tightening around her tea cup. "Explain."

"Vanessa claims her late father left her with a two-million-dollar debt to the Castiglione crime family, correct? That thugs were sent to her high-rise apartment yesterday morning to break her knees?"

"That was Gabriel’s justification for walking her into my wedding rehearsal," Claire said coldly.

"Well, the Castiglione family hasn't operated in Boston for five years," Drake said, tapping the folder. "Their leadership was indicted by the Feds in 2021. But more importantly: Vanessa Russo’s bank accounts haven't been empty. In the last eighteen months, she has received three substantial wire transfers from an offshore account originating in Panama."

Claire frowned, opening the file. "Totaling how much?"

"Five point four million dollars," Drake replied. "And the signature on the shell company funding those accounts belongs to an investment firm called Black Harbor Maritime."

Claire felt the air leave her lungs. "Black Harbor? That’s Salvatore Moretti’s old outfit. Gabriel’s uncle."

"The uncle Gabriel exiled to Europe after the dock wars seven years ago," Drake confirmed. "Salvatore wants back into Boston. But he can't get past Gabriel’s security perimeter. Not unless he has an inside line. Someone who can distract Gabriel, drain his emotional reserves, and create a fracture between Moretti Logistics and the Bennett fleet."

A cold, sickening revelation washed over Claire.

Vanessa’s sudden appearances over the past year. Her constant crises. Her panic attacks whenever Gabriel and Claire were finalizing their merger contracts. The mysterious threats that conveniently flared up whenever Gabriel was supposed to be by Claire’s side.

It wasn't just a desperate woman clutching at an old family friendship.

It was a calculated, orchestrated sabotage.

"Vanessa isn't a victim," Claire said, the realization settling into her marrow like frost. "She’s Salvatore’s inside operative. And Gabriel is so blinded by his pathological savior complex that he handed her the keys to his empire."

"And your wedding pearls," Drake added gently.

Claire stood up, walking toward the high French doors that looked out onto the stormy ocean. The rain was lashing against the glass, matching the storm brewing within her chest.

"Does Gabriel know any of this?" Claire asked.

"No," Drake said. "Gabriel has his men watching her apartment building, treating her like a fragile princess under siege. He’s running blind because he believes in blood debts. His loyalty is his blind spot."

Claire touched the cold glass. For three years, that blind spot had eaten away at her happiness, slowly chipping at her self-worth until she had been reduced to an afterthought at her own wedding rehearsal.

She could call Gabriel right now. She could send him the documents. He would crush Vanessa within an hour.

*No,* Claire thought, her eyes narrowing in the dark reflection of the window. *If I tell him, he’ll think it’s jealousy. He’ll think I’m trying to win him back by smearing his sacred childhood friend.*

"Let him stay blind for now," Claire said quietly, turning back to Drake. "Keep digging. I want the wire transfers linked directly to Salvatore’s accounts. I want every text message, every phone call between Vanessa and Black Harbor. When I take the veil off Gabriel’s eyes, I want the truth to leave a scar that never fades."
