Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail of Lies

The private medical suite at the Moretti estate was kept strictly off the grid.
Two surgeons had worked for three hours to extract a 9mm hollow-point round from beneath Gabriel’s left shoulder blade. He had refused general anesthesia, demanding only local numbing and a bottle of bourbon so he could remain conscious.
Claire stood in the corner of the sterile room, her coat stained with Gabriel’s blood. She had refused to leave until the monitors stabilized.
Beside her stood Nicholas Moretti, looking at his brother with grim exhaustion. Elena sat in an armchair, silently weeping into a lace handkerchief.
The heavy oak door swung open, and Vanessa Russo rushed into the room, her hair artfully disheveled, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.
"Gabriel! Oh God, Gabriel!" Vanessa cried, throwing herself toward the hospital bed. "They told me you were shot! I came as fast as I could!"
"Stop right there," Claire’s voice cracked through the room like a whip.
Vanessa froze, turning around with a look of wounded indignation. "Claire? How dare you speak to me like that! Gabriel took a bullet tonight because of your shipping docks! If you hadn't canceled the security merger—"
"Shut up, Vanessa," Claire said coldly, stepping forward and tossing a thick, blue legal dossier onto the rolling tray table at the foot of Gabriel’s bed.
Gabriel, pale and sweating against the pillows, turned his dark, heavy gaze toward Claire. "Claire... what is that?"
"That is the record of your loyalty, Gabriel," Claire said, looking down at Vanessa. "Or rather, the price of your blindness."
Vanessa’s face paled, the manufactured tears instantly drying. "I don't know what she’s talking about, Gabriel. She’s trying to poison you against me because she’s jealous!"
"Open the folder, Nicholas," Claire commanded.
Nicholas didn't hesitate. He flipped open the file and began reading aloud, his voice growing colder with every word.
"Account transfers from Panama City to Vanessa Russo’s personal accounts in the Cayman Islands. Five point four million dollars over eighteen months. Deposited by Black Harbor Maritime." Nicholas looked up, his eyes blazing with fury. "And encrypted text transcripts between Vanessa and Salvatore Moretti. She gave Salvatore the security codes to Terminal 4 yesterday afternoon. She staged the threats at her apartment. There were no Castiglione collectors, Gabriel. It was Salvatore’s men, coordinated by her."
Silence fell over the room like a tombstone.
Elena Moretti stopped weeping. She slowly looked up at Vanessa, her expression morphing from grief to aristocratic venom.
Gabriel lay completely still. His heart monitor beeped in a steady, rapid rhythm. Slowly, painfully, he pulled himself upright against the pillows, ignoring the fresh red stain blooming through his bandages.
"Vanessa," Gabriel said. His voice was not loud. It was not angry. It was the terrifying, hollow whisper of a demon pronouncing judgment. "Look at me."
Vanessa began to tremble violently. "Gabriel... please. Salvatore threatened me... he said he would kill me if I didn't help—"
"You wore the pearls," Gabriel whispered, his eyes void of any humanity. "You wore my bride’s pearls into the house of God... while you were selling my ports to the man who murdered my cousin."
"Gabriel, I loved you!" Vanessa shrieked, backing toward the door. "Claire never loved you! She wanted your power, she wanted your fleet! I would have given you everything!"
"Nicholas," Gabriel said quietly, never taking his eyes off the trembling woman.
"Yeah?"
"Take the pearls off her neck."
Nicholas stepped forward, his face hard as flint. Vanessa gasped and tried to reach for the door, but Nicholas grabbed her wrist, twisting it behind her back with cold efficiency. With his other hand, he took the delicate diamond clasp of the three-strand necklace and ripped it from her throat.
The silk string snapped.
A shower of cream-white pearls bounced across the hardwood floor, rolling under the furniture, scattering into the shadows like forgotten tears.
"Throw her in the basement," Gabriel said, sinking back against the pillows, his breathing shallow and ragged. "Call the federal prosecutor on our payroll. Give them Salvatore’s shipping manifest. And make sure Vanessa never sees the sunlight of Boston again."
Nicholas dragged the screaming, sobbing woman out of the room, slamming the heavy door behind them.
May you like
Elena stood up, looked at Claire with deep, unspoken shame, and quietly exited, leaving Claire and Gabriel alone.
