Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the Office

Two weeks later, the transition of absolute authority was brought to its final administrative conclusion at the civilian-military liaison office in downtown Miami. Naomi sat behind a polished oak conference table, flanked by two military legal aides. Across from her sat Daniel Mercer.

He looked a shadow of his former self. His custom black tuxedo was replaced by an off-the-rack gray suit that hung loosely on his frame; his clean-shaven face carried several days of heavy, unkempt stubble, and his eyes were bloodshot and hollow. The arrogant, smug CEO wannabe had completely vanished.

""Naomi... please,"" Daniel muttered, his voice cracking pathetically as he pushed a final stack of signed property transfer documents across the table. ""Can we... is there really no way to talk about this? We had five years...""

Naomi didn't even touch the papers. She let one of her legal aides handle the verification. Her brown eyes rested on Daniel with cool, unblinking detachment.

""You had five years to be a partner, Daniel. Instead, you chose to be a parasite, conspiring with your mother to undermine my career, mock my achievements, and treat our marriage as a stepping stone for your fraudulent real estate schemes,"" Naomi said, her voice cutting through the quiet office like cold steel. ""You didn't value me. You valued the uniform you thought you could exploit, and the rank you tried to weaponize against me.""

Daniel swallowed hard, a tear spilling down his unshaven cheek. ""Mother... Mother is the one who pushed for the Naples house, she made me—""

""Stop,"" Naomi commanded, her tone snapping like a whip. ""Do not blame your mother for your own spineless cowardice. You made every choice of your own free will. Now you get to live with the consequences of every single one of them.""

The legal aide slid the final verification document toward Daniel along with a heavy-nib pen. ""Sign here, Mr. Mercer. This finalizes the total relinquishment of all shared corporate holdings, vehicle titles, and secondary residential deeds to General Vance.""

With shaking hands, Daniel picked up the pen. His fingers trembled so violently he could barely form his signature. As the ink bled onto the page, he realized the full, irreversible extent of his self-destruction. He had traded a brilliant, powerful, fiercely loyal wife for the hollow approval of a bitter mother and the illusion of unearned wealth—and now he had nothing left at all.

Naomi watched him sign away the last remnants of his fraudulent claims without the slightest flicker of emotion. When he dropped the pen, she stood up smoothly, adjusting the cuffs of her navy blazer.

""Have a safe trip back north, Mr. Mercer,"" Naomi said evenly. ""You won't be hearing from me again.""

Without another glance, she turned and walked out of the conference room, leaving him sitting alone in the silent, sterile office.
