Chapter 3 - The Shattered Glass

The title Brigadier General hung in the heavy ballroom air like a thunderclap, vibrating against the crystal chandeliers and echoing off the cream columns. The shockwave hit Patricia Mercer first.

The triumphant smile froze on her lined face, her jaw dropping slack as her brain frantically tried to process the impossible reality. Her fingers, suddenly slick with nervous sweat, lost their grip on the crystal champagne flute. The glass slipped from her fingers, plunging downward to shatter violently against the polished parquet floor at her feet. Shards of crystal and splatters of golden champagne scattered in all directions. Guests nearby gasped and instinctively stepped back, though everyone remained clear of the glittering hazard zone on the floor, leaving Patricia standing in a literal ring of her own making.

Daniel Mercer, still hiding partially behind General Avery across the room, jerked his head up as if struck by lightning. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving his athletic frame trembling inside his immaculate black tuxedo. He stared across the ballroom at his wife—no, not just his wife, but Brigadier General Naomi Vance—and realized the catastrophic magnitude of what he had allowed his mother to orchestrate.

Naomi stood completely still, her dark brown eyes devoid of warmth, looking down at Patricia with a gaze so piercing it could cut glass. She didn't scream, she didn't gloat, and she didn't raise her voice. Her quiet, composed authority commanded the entire room far more effectively than any shouting match ever could.

Staff Sergeant Miller held the open credential case for another beat before respectfully closing it and handing it back with both hands. Naomi took the case back with effortless grace and placed it neatly back inside her black satin clutch, snapping the magnetic clasp shut with a satisfying click.

Around the room, high-ranking officers who had previously ignored Naomi now stood at strict attention, their expressions shifting from casual amusement to sudden, deep reverence. General Avery stepped away from Daniel, his eyes widening in recognition as he looked across the floor at the brilliant woman standing by the terrace doors.

Patricia’s knees buckled slightly, her emerald silk gown rustling as she clutched at her diamond bracelet for support. The tables had turned with such dizzying speed that the entire foundation of the Mercer family's arrogance had been blasted into dust. And the worst was only just beginning.
