Chapter 4 - The Unmasking of a Coward

As the echoes of the shattering champagne glass faded into the heavy silence of Liberty Hall, Daniel Mercer found himself unable to stay hidden any longer. Realizing that the eyes of every senior officer, investor, and elite guest were now burning into him, he forced his trembling legs to move.

He stepped out from behind the protective barrier of General Avery, walking slowly across the parquet floor toward Naomi. His face was a mask of sheer panic, his clean-shaven jaw twitching slightly as he tried to summon a desperate, pleading smile.

""Naomi... darling..."" Daniel stammered, his voice tight, cracking slightly under the pressure. ""There has been a terrible misunderstanding. Mother didn't mean... she was confused, we didn't know—""

Naomi did not move an inch. She stood tall in her sleeveless floor-length black gown, her low bun immaculate, her posture radiating an untouchable, ice-cold dignity. She watched her husband approach with the clinical detachment of a scientist observing a specimen under a microscope.

""You didn't know, Daniel?"" Naomi’s voice cut through the quiet room like a surgical blade, crystal clear and devoid of any emotional tremor. ""You stood right beside her. You watched her demand my removal from this base. And instead of speaking up, instead of defending your wife, you shrank behind General Avery and lowered your eyes.""

""I... I was just shocked! I didn't want to cause a scene in front of the command staff,"" Daniel bumbled frantically, reaching out a manicured hand to touch her arm.

Naomi stepped back, evading his touch entirely as if his very presence was toxic. Her attention settled entirely on the man she had married—the man who had worn a platinum wedding band while hiding his cowardice behind hollow suits and sycophantic smiles.

She raised her left hand, the platinum wedding band gleaming under the harsh brilliance of the crystal chandeliers. With slow, deliberate precision, she slipped the ring off her finger. The metal felt cold against her skin, a fitting symbol of the lifeless, fraudulent marriage she was finally casting off.

Without breaking eye contact with her cowering husband, Naomi pressed the heavy platinum band directly into his open, trembling palm, curling his fingers tightly around it.

""You wanted to put me in my place, Daniel,"" Naomi whispered, her voice carrying a terrifying, quiet intensity. ""You forgot that the place I hold was earned with blood, sweat, and absolute dedication to this country—things a coward like you could never possibly comprehend.""

Daniel stared down at the ring in his hand, his chest heaving as the crushing weight of his ruined life crashed down upon him. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out.
