Chapter 2 - The Credential Case

The heavy silence inside Liberty Hall seemed to press down on the guests like a physical weight. Staff Sergeant Miller stopped inches from Naomi, his expression a mask of stern, professional duty. Behind him, the second military police officer stood at strict attention, his hands clasped behind his back, eyes locked straight ahead.

Naomi did not blink. Her composure remained an unshakeable fortress. With slow, deliberate movements, she opened her black satin clutch, her slender fingers brushing against the silk lining before wrapping around the matte-black credential case tucked safely inside.

Patricia Mercer watched the scene unfold with a wide, triumphant, and deeply malicious smile spreading across her lined face. She raised her champagne flute slightly, as if pre-emptively celebrating her petty victory over the woman she had always viewed as beneath her son's social standing.

""Make sure she is taken out through the service entrance, Sergeant,"" Patricia sneered, her voice dripping with spite. ""We cannot have unvetted commoners ruining a formal military event.""

Naomi ignored her entirely. Without a single word of protest, she extended her hand and handed the matte-black credential case directly to Staff Sergeant Miller.

A sharp, collective intake of breath echoed from the nearby tables as the guests strained their necks to see what would happen next. Miller accepted the case with his white-gloved hands. A close-up flash of the chandelier light caught the polished metal insignia on the cover as Miller flipped the case open.

Instantly, the Sergeant’s professional expression vanished, replaced by stark, absolute shock. His eyes locked onto the official Department of Defense identification insignia and the high-level security clearance codes stamped across the document. In a fraction of a second, Miller’s posture snapped even straighter, his shoulders squaring, his heels clicking together with military precision.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Staff Sergeant Miller brought his right hand up to the brim of his peaked cap in a crisp, flawless salute.

""Brigadier General Vance, ma'am,"" Miller barked, his voice ringing loud, clear, and resonant across the vast expanse of Liberty Hall.

The second MP immediately mirrored his superior's movement, executing a sharp, synchronized salute that left no room for error.

For three seconds, time itself seemed to stop inside the ballroom. Then, like a wave crashing against a shore, nearby conversations fell completely silent in an uneven, natural succession as realization rippled through the elite crowd.
