Chapter 5 - The Wedding Ultimatum

Arthur Carter looked down at the portfolio, then up at the three gleaming stars on Alexander's shoulders, and finally at me. For the first time in my life, I saw genuine fear in my father’s eyes—not of me, but of the sheer, unstoppable institutional power standing beside me.
"General... Hale," my father stammered, desperately trying to salvage his dignity. "Surely we can handle this like family. We can pay for the clothes! Name your price. A new uniform, designer dresses—whatever it costs! We have guests arriving tomorrow for the rehearsal dinner, the rehearsal is tonight! We can't have a scandal!"
Alexander looked down at my father with icy pity. "You care about a scandal, Mr. Carter? You care about what your country club friends and business associates will say when military police arrive with a search warrant and federal charges for destruction of government property?"
Eleanor let out a sharp gasp and clutched her chest, swaying slightly. "Arthur! Do something! He's threatening us! Over a daughter who ran away to play doctor!"
"Eleanor, shut your mouth," my father hissed, spinning around to face his wife with sudden fury. For thirty years, my mother had ruled our household with absolute impunity, but the sudden reality of federal prison time for destroying military property had instantly shattered his complacency. He turned back to Alexander, his voice trembling. "General... please. What do you want? What will make this go away?"
Alexander didn't answer immediately. He looked down at me, his eyes softening instantly, wordlessly asking for my decision.
I stepped forward, letting go of his hand, and looked my parents dead in the eye.
"I'll tell you what is going to happen," I said, my voice carrying the absolute authority of a trauma surgeon who has managed mass-casualty chaos. "First, we are going upstairs right now, and I am packing every single remaining belonging I own. Second, Alexander and I are leaving this house immediately. We will not be attending Lucas's rehearsal dinner tonight, and we will not be attending the wedding tomorrow."

"Emily, you can't do that!" Eleanor screeched, her panic boiling over. "You're Lucas's sister! What will people say when they ask where you are?"
"You can tell them the truth," I replied coldly. "Tell them you shredded my uniform and my clothes because you were ashamed of my service. Tell them you drove your daughter away with your toxic obsession with status."
